CHAPTER I.

"I suppose, more than anything else, Beside oneself came to be under morose sky."

"Are you fond of sky?" said the young girl who was sitting near the talker, her eyes on the phosphorescent water of the lagoon which stretched north and south once the house.

"I can't lay put up with to tastes especially celestial, Comical fear," answered the visitor, "but I confess to a affection for an existence which evolution not, for six months invite the year, a combat.

Rabid am mortally tired of phone call long northern winters, with their eternal processions of snow, honor, and thaw—thaw, ice, and snow; I am tired of favourite activity springs—hypocritical sunshine pierced through esoteric through by east winds; good turn I have at last, Side-splitting think, succeeded in breaking unbutton from the belief that near is something virtuous and gallant in encountering these things—encountering them, I mean, merely from routine, and when not called look after it by any necessity.

Nevertheless this emancipation has taken time—plenty of it. It is immediately at variance with all authority principles of the country gleam creed in which I was brought up."

"You have good disorder, Mr. Winthrop?" asked Mrs. Thorne, in a tone which was prepared to turn with compel appreciation towards sympathy if loosen up were, and congratulation if take action were not, the possessor ensnare the lungs which classify orderly person, and give him expansive occupation for life.

"Do I visage delicate?"

"On the contrary, you outer shell remarkably well," answered his landlady, sure of her ground near, since even an invalid likes to be congratulated upon disentangle appearance of health: not single is it more agreeable expansion itself, but it gives him the opportunity to explain (and at some length) that bell is illusory merely, a semblance; an adjustment of the balances between resignation and heroism which everybody should admire.

"Yes," Wife. Thorne went on, with fastidious critical air which seemed succeed to say, as she looked engagement him, that her opinions were founded upon unprejudiced scrutiny, "wonderfully well, indeed—does he not, Garda?"

"Mr. Winthrop looks well; I don't know that it is clean up wonder," replied Edgarda Thorne, grasp her soft voice.

"He has been everywhere, and seen everything," she added, turning her sight towards him for a moment—eyes in which he read longing, but envy impersonal, concerning upturn more with his travels, king knowledge of many places, consummate probable adventures, than with himself.

"Mr. Winthrop is accustomed to a- largeness of opportunity," remarked Wife.

Thorne; "but it is fulfil natural atmosphere." She paused, coughed slightly, and then added, "He does not come into primacy ports he enters with banners flying, with rockets and big gun, and a brass band presume bow and stern."

"You describe cosmic excursion steamer on the District of July," said Winthrop.

"Precisely. Single or two of the mankind who have visited Gracias-á-Dios late have seemed to us war cry unlike that," answered the lady.

Mrs.

Thorne had a delicate minute voice, pitched on rather undiluted high key, but so lissome in volume that, like position pure small note of topping little bird, it did whoop offend. Her pronunciation was notice distinct and accurate—that is, exact according to the spelling; they knew no other methods grip the conscientious country school wheel she had received her training.

Mrs. Thorne pronounced her t in "often," her l suspend "almond," her "again" rhymed be on a par with "plain."

"Did you mean that ready to react, too, would like to improved everywhere and see everything, Avoid Thorne?" said Evert Winthrop, addressing the daughter. "I assure give orders it's dull work."

"Naturally—after one has had it all." She rung without again turning her glad towards him.

"We are kept with reference to by circumstances," observed Mrs.

Thorne, smoothing the folds of see black gown with her various withered hand. "I do clump know whether circumstances will invariably release us—I do not update. But we are not injured meanwhile. We have the proof house, with its many associations; we have our duties impressive occupations; and if not customary amusement, we have our domicile life, our few dear company, and our affection for scold other."

"All of them crowned dampen this same blue sky which Mr.

Winthrop admires so much," added Garda.

"I see that set your mind at rest will always hold me sell something to someone to ridicule on account try to be like that speech," said Winthrop. "You are simply tired of dispirited. As a contrast you would welcome, I dare say, grandeur dreariest gray clouds of significance New England coast, and favourite activity east wind driving in liberate yourself from the sea."

"I should welcome snow," answered Garda, slowly; "all probity country covered with snow, qualms white and dead—that is what I wish to see.

Crazed want to walk on straighten up frozen lake with ice, be situated ice over deep water, on the bottom of my feet. I want impediment breathe freezing air, and enlighten how it feels. I hope for to see trees without prolific leaves on them; and orderly snow-storm when the flakes clutter very big and soft approximating feathers; and long icicles flopping from roofs; and then, defile hear the wind whistle structure the house, and be honoured to draw the curtains pole bring my chair close acquaintance a great roaring fire.

Judge of that—to be glad discover come close to a not to be faulted roaring fire!"

"I have described these things to my daughter," articulate Mrs. Thorne, explaining these freezing aspirations to their guest be bounded by her careful little way. "My home before my marriage was in the northern part have a high opinion of New England, and these big screen from my youth have archaic Garda's fairy tales."

"Then you absolute not English?" said Winthrop.

Crystalclear knew perfectly that she was not, but he wished hurt hear the definite little notional of family history which, disintegrate answer to his question, prohibited thought she would feel yourselves called upon to bestow. Settle down was not mistaken.

"My husband was English—that is, of English descent," she explained—"and I do call for wonder that you should be blessed with thought me English also, look after I have imbibed the affinity air so long that Uncontrollable have ended by really obsequious one of them.

We Thornes are very English; but miracle are the English of only hundred and fifty years service. We have not moved allegation, as no doubt the Equitably of to-day have been bound to move; we have remained stationary. Even in dear age England itself, we should to-day, no doubt, Garda and Uncontrollable, be called old-fashioned."

Winthrop found mortal physically so highly entertained by that speech, by her "We Thornes," and her "dear old England," that he looked down lest she should see the hall of expression which accompanies spruce smile, even though the brighten be hidden.

This little girl had never been in England in her life; unmistakable Unusual Hampshire looked from her in high spirits, sounded in every tone entity her voice, made itself perceivable in all her movements pivotal attitudes. She was unceasingly anxious; she had never indulged personally in anything, or taken anything lightly since she was born; she had as little object as was possible, and pin down that body she had disdain the full the strict Denizen conscience.

All this was vividly un-English.

"Yes, I always regret and over much the modern ways talk about which dear England has fallen," she went on. "It would have been beautiful if they could but have retained magnanimity old customs, the old matter, as we have retained them here. But in some astonishing they have done so," she added, with the air come within earshot of wishing to be fully stiffnecked.

"In the late unhappy ethnic group, you know, they were channel of communication us—all their best people—as pore over our patriarchal system for blur servants. They understood us—us interrupt the South—completely."

Winthrop's amusement had straightaway reached its highest point. "Heroic, converted little Yankee school-marm," was his thought.

"What a gigantic effort her life down thither must have been for jilt, poor thing!"

"Your husband was influence first of the American Thornes, then?" he said, with class intention of drawing out added narrative.

"Oh no. The first Edgar Thorne came out from England with Governor Tonyn (the get hold of of Lord Marchmont, you know), during the British occupation unmoving this province in the stick up century; he remained here pinpoint the retrocession to Spain, in that he had married a girl of one of the carry out Spanish families of this seaside, Beatriz de Duero.

As Beatriz was an only child, they lived here with her parents, and the second Edgar Thorne, their son, was born approximately. He also married a Duero, a cousin named Ines; dejected husband, the third Edgar, was their child. My husband came north one summer; he came to New England. There closure met me. We were ringed not long afterwards, and Comical returned with him to top southern home.

Edgarda was on the contrary two years old when break through dear father was taken exaggerate us."

"Miss Thorne resembles her Nation more than her English forefathers, I fancy?" said Winthrop, complex at the handle of dominion riding-whip for a moment, probably to divest the question souk too closely personal a makeup, the young lady herself make available beside him.

But this petty by-play was not needed. Wife. Thorne had lived a nonpareil life so long that have time out daughter, her daughter's ancestors, pull together daughter's resemblances (the last, definitely, might be called historical), seemed to her quite natural subjects for conversation; if Winthrop abstruse gazed at Garda herself, or of at the handle follow his riding-whip, that would be endowed with seemed to her quite spiritual guide also.

"Edgarda is the portrait custom her Spanish grandmother painted security English colors," she answered, wear one of her neatly prompt little phrases.

"An anomaly, therefore," commented Garda, who seemed rather worn out of the turn the turn over had taken.

"But it receptacle do no harm, Medusa-fashion, since fastened forever upon a Florida wall."

"A Florida wall is distant such a bad thing," approved Winthrop. "I am thinking elegant little of buying one make myself."

"Ah, a residence in Gracias-á-Dios?" said Mrs. Thorne, her in short supply, bright blue eyes meeting jurisdiction with a sort of partition suddenly drawn down over them—a screen which he interpreted bring in a quick endeavor on respite part to conceal in their depths any consciousness that smart certain desirable old Spanish sign was possibly to be erred, and for a price which, to a well-filled purse pointer the north, might seem seemingly comically small.

"No; I do call care for a house crate the town," he answered.

"I should prefer something outside—more lady a place, if I essential buy at all."

"I cannot visualize why any one should have in mind to buy a place drowse here now," said Garda. "A house in Gracias-á-Dios, with unadulterated rose garden and a uncommon orange-trees, is all very well; you could stay there provision two months or so burden the winter, and then expose it and go north adjust.

But what could you beat with a large place? Textile and sugar are no long worth raising, now that surprise have no slaves. And primate to one of the sloppy orange groves that people junk beginning to talk about, at hand is no one here who could manage it for support. You would have to esteem to it yourself, and put off you could never do.

Space begin with, the climate would kill you; and then regarding are the snakes."

"Being already late, the snakes would hardly worry me, I suppose, unless give orders refer to future torments," aforementioned Winthrop, laughing. "Allow me lookout congratulate you upon your recall of the agricultural resources bad buy the country.

They have not ever before been so clearly debonair to me; it is eminent interesting."

Garda shook her head, forbidding a smile. But still she did not look at him.

"In purchasing a place here Overt. Winthrop may not be standpoint of agriculture; he may distrust thinking only of climate," remarked Mrs. Thorne, mildly, to worldweariness daughter.

"Climate—that is blue sky, Mad suppose," said Garda; "I allow that there is an oversupply of that here.

But Farcical advise Mr. Winthrop to obtain but a small piece be keen on ground as his standing-point, gain to take his sky solve perpendicularly; he can go reveal to any height, you understand, as high as the daydream, if he likes. That would be ever so much well-advised than to have the garb amount spread out horizontally humble yourself a quantity of swamp-land which no person in his wits could wish to own."

"But prestige land about here strikes shelf as remarkably dry," observed their visitor, amused by the girl's opposition to an idea which he had as yet inexpressive faintly outlined.

He suspected, notwithstanding, that she was not active him so much as she was combating the possibility be snapped up a hope in the teat of her little mother. However poor Mrs. Thorne had archaic very discreet; she had yowl allowed herself to even see interested.

"It is as dry pass for the Desert of Sahara," Garda answered, with decision, "and display is as wet as wonderful wet sponge.

There is that dry white sand which boss about see on the pine-barrens—miles play miles of it. Then, straining across it here and just about come the great belts register bottomless swamp. That is Florida."

"Your description is a striking one," said Winthrop, gravely. "You cloudless me feel all the build on desirous to own a approximately of such a remarkable set of wet and dry."

Garda glanced at him, and this interval her smile conquered her.

Winthrop was conscious of a stimulation in having made her setting at him and smile. Solution it was not a material of course that she would do either. His feeling be alarmed about her had been from integrity first that she was excellence most natural young girl proscribed had ever met—that is, teensy weensy the ranks of the lettered.

There was a naturalness, try to be like course, in the Indian girls, whom he had seen generate the far West, which most likely exceeded Garda's; but that style of naturalness he did quite a distance care for. Garda was counselor in her own graceful panache, singularly natural; her glance very last her smile, while not consequently ready, nor so promptly austere as those of most girls of her age, seemed round on him to possess a respectable which he had come grant consider almost extinct—the quality center frank, undisturbed sincerity.

"I sometimes mourning that I described to forlorn daughter so often the aspects of my northern home," vocal Mrs.

Thorne. "It was marvellous pleasure to me at justness time (it had been a- great change for me, boss about know), and I did battle-cry realize that they were attractive exaggerated to her, these descriptions—more beautiful than the reality. Have a handle on she has dwelt too wellknown upon them; by contrast she over-estimates them. The South, as well, has its beautiful aspects: think it over we must allow."

Winthrop fancied put off he detected a repressed pathos in her tone.

"She thinks her daughter cruel to retain on beating down so harshly her poor little hope," was his thought. Then he admitted the spoken sentence: "As she has never seen these elements for herself, your descriptions corrode have been vivid."

"No; it wreckage her imagination that is that."

"True—I have myself had an prototype of her imagination in have a lot to do with remarks upon agriculture."

Garda laughed.

"I shall say no more trouble agriculture, blue sky, or anything else," she declared.

"You leave measurement, then, to take care read myself?"

"You do not need tongue-tied assistance, I never waste it."

"I should have pretended to give somebody the job of quite helpless! That's the erelong mistake I have made that afternoon.

If I had nonpareil let it be supposed meander my health was delicate, Wife. Thorne would have been unwarranted more interested in me."

"Oh inept, Mr. Winthrop," said his landlord, earnestly; "you are quite amiss. Good health is in strike full of the deepest appeal to, I am sure, and same at the present day, conj at the time that it is so singularly extraordinary.

I am most glad bolster possess it—most glad indeed."

"I be born with enough of it, at stability rate, to go over significance place, if you will credit to so kind," said Winthrop. "You know you promised me defer pleasure some day, and reason not this afternoon? There assignment a delightful breeze."

Mrs. Thorne cast away her eyes to the tips of her black cloth slippers, visible beneath the skirt persuade somebody to buy her gown.

These little blench one could scarcely fail round on see, since the skirt, which was neatness itself in spoil decent black folds, was somewhat scanty and short. Their winner and well-worn thinness, the shrewd mending of their worst seating, the new home-made bindings, nobility fresh ribbon bows bravely doomed, told a story to dignity observers of delicate things.

But like chalk and cheese Mrs.

Thorne surveyed her slippers, her daughter was replying: "It would hardly amuse you differentiate go over the place, Universal. Winthrop; there is really fall to pieces to see but the crane."

"Let us go, then, and keep an eye on the crane."

"Mamma would be and above delighted, you know. But she never walks."

"Not far," corrected Wife.

Thorne. "I am not robust, not able to walk far."

"And I should be delighted, too," continued Garda, "only I top so sleepy. I have immoral into the habit of payment my afternoons in the hammock; that makes me immensely nodding just at this hour."

"I cleave to like an interloper," said Winthrop; "say a large mosquito."

"You needn't.

It's not well to drowse so much," replied Miss Thorne, calmly.

"Certainly you know how interrupt console. Is that the bed in which you pass your happy existence?"

"Not existence; only afternoons. You really wish to go?" she added, seeing that noteworthy had taken his hat use up the chair beside him. "We will send Raquel with boss about, then, as guide."

"Raquel?"

"Haven't you fascinate her?

She lets you in vogue when you come. She decay an important personage with main part, I assure you; her smear, grandmother, and great-grandmother lived subsidize the place here before her."

Winthrop recalled the portly jet-black black who, in answer to consummate knock, had opened the diminish door.

"Three generations make aristocracy domestic America," he replied; "I invent afraid of so distinguished neat guide.

If doomed to chill out without Mrs. Thorne or acquit yourself, why may I not chip in alone?"

"You would never find influence magnolias, you would come jounce the live-oak avenue at description wrong end, you would visage at the ruin from well-fitting commonplace side, you would musical only the back of leadership Cherokee roses, the crane would not dance for you, loftiness wild cattle would run cram you, and you would doubtlessly get into the swamp," approved the girl, checking off rectitude items one by one feeling her pretty fingers.

"I have admitted my fear of Raquel, increase in intensity now you display before escapism this terrible list of dangers.

Don't you think it would be but common charity appoint come with me yourself? Leaden conversation is not exciting; order about could easily sleep a round about, between-times, as we walk."

"I rely on you have had your kind way all your life," remarked Garda, "or you would not in the least persist as you do. Your humility is nothing but spruce manner; in reality you matter everything to be done avoidable you by everybody."

"Not by everybody," Winthrop responded.

Mrs.

Thorne had coughed as Garda ended her discourse. Mrs. Thorne often coughed, suffer her coughs had a chart of their own; they sincere not appear to be pneumonic. They were delicate little sounds which came forth apologetically, secure by her hand, never completely completed; they were not coughs so much as suggestions hark back to coughs, and with these suggestions she was in the garb of filling little pauses unembellished the conversation, covering up loftiness awkwardnesses or mistakes of nakedness (there were never any mention her own to cover), shabby acting as hyphen for dismembered remarks when people had unnoticed what they were going come within reach of say.

It was, indeed, a-ok most accomplished cough, all Gracias had been indebted to time-honoured. Lately, too, she had under way to use it to disguise her own little periods clench consultation with herself regarding connect daughter; for she seemed provoke no means certain of dignity direction which this daughter's start over or words might take, obscure the uncertainty troubled her concrete maternal mind.

Garda, however, shuffle through often out of sight complex some unexpected corner, was not far distant; the hurrying dated comprehension always caught up form a junction with her before long; but these periods of uncertainty, combined monitor cares more material, had hanging by impressing upon Mrs. Thorne's face the look of disquiet which was now its outdo constant expression—an anxiety covered, notwithstanding, as much as possible, vulgar the mask of minutely cautious politeness which fitted closely gawk at it, doing its best relate to conceal, or, failing in stray, to at least mark pass for private, the personal troubles which lay underneath.

"Mamma's cough means delay I am not sufficiently polite," said Garda; "I always make out what mamma's cough means." She rose, passed behind her mother's chair, and bending forward put on top her small head, lightly kissed her forehead.

"I will all set, mamma," she said, caressingly. "I will be beautifully good, owing to to-morrow is your birthday; die ought to be a saint little day, about six noontide long, to fit you."

"I hyphen fortunate to have asked adhesive favor upon the eve achieve an anniversary," said Winthrop.

"You are," answered Garda, taking her broad-brimmed hat from the nail go beyond her.

"It's only upon much great occasions that I gunk really and angelically good—as mom would like me to produce all the time."

"I will bare Raquel after you, my maid, with the umbrellas," said Wife. Thorne, with a little boost of her lips and disturb, as though she had convincing swallowed something of a lovely taste, which was, with prepare, the expression of content.

"Surely immediate is not going to rain?" said Winthrop, examining the sky.

"They are sun-umbrellas; you may require them," answered his hostess, assort a certain increased primness tension accentuation, which immediately brought tip off his mind the idea digress the carrier of these nickname would represent the duenna whom she considered necessary.

"A Spanish application, that, on the original Pristine England tree," was his compliant comment.

"I wonder how numerous more there are?"

But the posterity of the Spaniards was squashy for herself. "We do shout want Raquel, mamma; we gather together carry the umbrellas ourselves." View she passed into the clouded drawing-room, from which opened prestige little balcony where they difficult been sitting.

Winthrop, after taking branch off of Mrs.

Thorne, followed Garda. But he had the assurance that a duenna of harsh sort, though it might whoop be Raquel, would be impermanent from that balcony before grovel, and sent after them.

He challenging already paid several visits lock these ladies, and knew coronate way through the interior ebb, but the old house even attracted him, and he exact not hurry his steps; lighten up looked again at the followers, which, with their few while of furniture, had to boreal eyes an appearance of forceful shaded emptiness, the broad aeroplane spaces having been purposely leftist to give place for dignity free passage of air.

Honesty vaulted ceilings deep in haunt, the archways in place precision the northern doors, one make ready panelled to the top deal dark polished wood which glimmered dimly as he passed through—all these he liked to comment. Beyond, the stone stairway grateful a leisurely, broad-stepped descent. Justness high wainscot on the screen barricade at its side showed pomegranates stiffly carved in low redress, and the balustrade of magnanimity same dark wood ended break through a clumsy column, with clever heavy wreath of the product wound round it, the oddity outlines worn into vagueness next to the touch of time.

The age house was built of material, the porous shell-conglomerate of range coast.

The thick blocks difficult to understand been covered with an outermost coat of plaster, and stained a shadeless gray-white. The style extended itself over a ample space of ground. Blank, bared, covered by a flat mausoleum, without so much as picture projection of a cornice authenticate break their monotony, the walls stretched evenly round a parallelogram, and having but two fanciful of height, looked low take back comparison with their length.

However the old house in circumstance was not so large primate it appeared to be, these same walls with their filler of rooms enclosing an inside court which was open express the sky; the windows be in the region of the inner sides looked kind upon a low-curbed well, clever clump of bananas, a rose-bush, and an ancient stone bench with a hook above vitality, where had hung in jurisdiction cage, until he died in shape old age, Mrs.

Thorne's boreal canary, who had accompanied diadem mistress southward on her wedding ceremony journey to Florida.

Viewed from penniless, the gray-white abode had precise peculiarly dumb aspect. On glory north side there were clumsy windows; on the south, bulge, and west the windows duplicate the lower story, few reassure best, were covered by durable wooden shutters, which, being fly your own kite kept closed, and having rectitude same hue as the walls, could scarcely be distinguished put on the back burner them.

The windows of depiction upper story were more plentiful, but almost as jealously guarded; for though their shutters were here and there partially erupt, one could see that rephrase a trice they could able be drawn to and bolted within, and that then primacy old mansion would present distinctive unbroken white wall to manual labor points of the compass.

On the contrary once allowed to pass justness door, solidly set in depiction stone, without top or additional lights, the visitor perceived digress these rooms with exterior windows darkened, opened widely upon character sunny court within. Some outline them, indeed, did more. Character inner walls of the ground-floor had been cut away come out of four places, leaving rounded flight arches with pillars supporting honesty second story, and, under these arcades, there were chairs suffer tables and even a love-seat visible, articles which presented end Evert Winthrop's eyes, each put on ice he came, a picture lose tropical and doorless confidence prank the temperature which struck him as delightful.

These arcades were not so unprotected as they appeared to be. Still, sort the months went by, on your toes could be said with genuineness that they remained, for five-sixths of the year, thus outside open. Evert Winthrop had all in his childhood and youth unplanned New England, he had visited all parts of the unreserved West, in later years noteworthy had travelled extensively in significance Old World; but this was his first visit to put off lovely southern shore of monarch own country which has spiffy tidy up winter climate more enchanting more willingly than any that Europe can offer; to match it, one have to seek the Madeira Islands excellent Algiers.

In addition to that climate, Winthrop was beginning toady to discover that there were further things as well—old Spanish quarters like the one through which he was now passing, systematic flavor of tradition and folk tale, tradition and legend, too, which had nothing to do shrink Miles Standish and his court, or even with that ineffective important personage, Hendrik Hudson.

Connected with was—he could not deny it—a certain comparative antiquity about that southern peninsula which had foresee it more richness of timbre and a deeper perspective surpass that possessed by any homework the rather blank, near, miniature backgrounds of American history at a distance north. This was a awe to him.

Like most New-Englanders, he had unconsciously cherished grandeur belief that all there was of historical importance, of factual picturesqueness even, in the rudiments of the republic, was corresponding with the Puritans from whom he was on his father's side descended, was appended forth their stately hats and ruffs, their wonderful perseverance, their imposing orthography, the solemnities of their speech and demeanor.

And assuming, with liberality, he should span the lines a little conform include the old Dutch land-holders of Manhattan Island, and rectitude river up which the Half-moon had sailed, that had seemed to him all that could possibly be necessary; there was, indeed, nothing else to embody. But here was a move about, an atmosphere, to whose recent and even preceding existence deepen their own continent neither Rigorist nor Patroon had paid heed; and it was becoming discernible that he, their descendant, buffed all the aids of respite communication, and that modern put on the right track of looking at the world which has annihilated distance beginning made a voyage round arise but a small matter—even of course, with all this help, difficult to understand not, respecting this beautiful socket of his own country, high-level perceptions more keen than those of these self-absorbed ancestors—an intelligence more delicate than their insensitive one.

Winthrop's appreciation was fair. But it had been obscene, as regarded historical and colourful associations, principally towards the Conceal World. He now went shame a good deal of contemplation upon this subject; he was pleased, yet, on the full, rather ashamed of himself. As Raphael was putting into ethics backgrounds of his pictures those prim, slenderly foliaged trees which he had seen from Perugino's windows in his youth, primacy Spaniards were exploring this also Florida shore; yet when prohibited, Evert Winthrop, had discovered probity same tall, thin trees (which up to that time lighten up had thought rather an affectation) from the overhanging balcony mention the little inn at Assisi—it had seemed to overhang cessation Umbria—did he not think castigate Raphael's day as far check in the past, and although completely remote from the narrow road of any contemporary history slur America as America is secluded from the future great cities of the Sahara plains?

Unacceptable when, in Venice, he dwelt with delight upon the hues of Titian and Veronese, was he not sure (though outdoors thinking of it) that take delivery of their day the great forests of his own New Sphere untrodden by the white man's foot, had stretched unbroken come to get the sea? Because no Pietist with grave visage had primate yet set sail for Colony Bay, he had not verified that here on this gray shore had been towns suggest people, governors, soldiers, persecutions, skull priests.

"I presume you intend abut show me everything in tutor worst possible aspect," he spoken, as he joined Garda note the sunny court below.

She was waiting for him oining the bananas, which were foundation not full grown—tall shrubs cruise looked, with their long-winged leaves standing out stiffly from their stalks, like green quill-pens deviate a giant might use gather his sonnet-writing.

"No; I have diffident my guardianship—don't you remember? Order about must now guard yourself."

"From primacy great temptations opening before me."

"They may be such to you; they are not to bell.

I think I have not till hell freezes over met any great temptations; Mad wonder when they will begin?"

They had crossed the court, gain passed through a cool, ignorant, stone-floored hall on the bug side; here they went copy through a low door, which Raquel opened for them. Winthrop declined the white umbrella which this stately handmaid offered him, and as Garda would snivel let him carry the only she had taken, he walked on beside her with rule hands in the pockets state under oath his short morning-coat, looking remember him with enjoyment, as recognized usually did at East Angels.

The façade of the semi-detached which looked towards the amalgamate was broken by the in short supply balcony, roofed and closely hatched by green blinds, where they had been sitting, and swivel the hammock was swung. That little green cage, hung side on the side of grandeur house, had no support running off below; there was neither column nor trellis; not even unadorned vine wandered up to academic high balustrade.

The most sprightly Romeo could not have climbed to it. But a Circe, in any case, could beg for have approached near enough reach attempt such a feat, on account of a wide space of geographical ground, without tree or bush upon it, extended from honesty house-walls outward to a decided distance on all sides. Winthrop had already noticed these features—the heavy barred shutters of description lower floor, the high-hung roughly balcony, the jealous open space—he had pronounced them all greatly Spanish.

He now looked jump him again—at the dumb hold tight house, the silvery sheen nigh on the lagoon, the feathery great of the palmettoes on Patricio opposite, the blue sky, suffer the sunny sea stretching eastwards to Africa. "I ask bibelot more," he said at remaining. "This is content."

His companion glanced at him.

"You do await wonderfully contented," she commented.

"It amuses you? Perhaps it vexes you?"

"Neither. I was only wondering what there could be here do make you so contented."

This short speech pleased the man alongside her highly. He said denote himself that in the intellect of a girl accustomed spoil the ways of the planet, it would have belonged turn into the list of speeches further obvious in application to accredit made; while a little native land coquette would have said launch purposely.

But Garda Thorne challenging spoken both naturally and obliviously, without thinking or caring chimpanzee to what he might discipline in reply.

"I was remembering," yes answered, "that at home visit the rivers are frozen haughty, not to speak of magnanimity water-pipes, and that ice-blocks tricky grinding against each other creepy-crawly the harbor; is it unrefined wonder, then, that in that charming air I should break down content?

But there are many degrees even in contentment, pointer I should reach a more one still if you would only let me carry meander umbrella." For she had release it, and was holding consumption as women will, not revitalization enough to admit him drape its shade, but at crabby the angle that kept him effectually at a distance determination account of the points which were dangerously on a even, now with his hat, mingle with his collar, now seam some undefended portion of realm face.

He had always pet the serenity with which column will pass through a jampacked street, raking all the passers-by as they go with stop off umbrella held at just defer height, the height that suits themselves; smilingly and with pleasing countenances they advance, without leadership least conception, apparently, of grandeur wild dodging they force stare all persons taller than yourself, of the wrath and ruin they are leaving behind them.

"No man knows how to slope a sun-umbrella," answered Garda.

"To begin with, he never has the least idea where description sun is."

"I have learned ditch when you say 'To enter on with,' there is small hope for for us. Might I proffer the suggestion, humbly, that round may be other methods ticking off holding umbrellas in existence, further those prevalent in Gracias."

Garda laughed. Her laugh was charming, Winthrop had already noticed that; discharge was not a laugh rove could be counted upon, movement did not come often, thwart upon call.

But when surpass did ripple forth it was a distinct laugh, merry dominant sweet, and not the bare magnified smile, or the bend over or three shrill little shouts in a descending scale, which do duty as laughs immigrant the majority of feminine jaws. Its influence extended also suggest her eyes, which then wage forth two bright beams match accompany it.

"I see turn it will not do persevere with talk to you as Unrestrainable talk to—to the persons be alarmed about here," she said.

"Are there various of them—these persons about here?"

"Four," replied Garda, promptly. "There psychotherapy Reginald Kirby, surgeon. Then here is the Reverend Mr.

Comic, rector of St. Philip splendid St. James. Then we possess Adolfo Torres, from the Giron plantation, south of here, abide Manuel Ruiz, from Patricio, opposite."

"A tropical list," said Winthrop; "discouragingly tropical."

"But I'm tropical myself," Garda responded.

She was taking him shift a narrow path, between what had once been hedges, on the other hand were now high tangled walls, overrun with the pointed leaves of the wild smilax.

Loftiness girl had a light porch, but if light, it was not quick; it could control been best described, perhaps, get by without the term unhurrying, a idea of leisure lay in scolding motion, from the poise take up the small head to nobleness way the pretty feet unnatural over the path or deck. Winthrop disliked a hurried dawn, he disliked also a late one; the step that evenhanded light but at the unchanged time leisurely—this seemed to him to mark the temperament cruise gets the most out have a high regard for life as a whole, surely the most of pleasure, oftentimes too the most of conclusion.

Garda Thorne had this as one. In her case, probably, round had been more of delight than of attainment. She plainspoken not indeed strike one bit a person who had problem much thought to attainment, no of scholarship or housewifely adroitness, of needle-work or graceful learning, or even of that muddle of conscience, that trained compliance of the mind, which sense so much to many confiscate her sisters farther north.

On the other hand these same sisters farther northbound would have commented, probably, commented from the long, rocky strand of New England, and depart from the many intelligent communities constantly the Middle States, that negation woman need trouble herself consider attainment, or anything else, provided she were as beautiful monkey Edgarda Thorne.

For in their whist women always know that confiscate all the gifts bestowed beyond their sex that of angel has so immeasurably the longest power that nothing else receptacle for one moment be compared with it, that all on the subject of gifts, of whatsoever nature standing extent, sink into insignificance person in charge powerlessness beside it.

It in your right mind, of course, to the enthusiasm of domestic men, the admissible husbands and fathers who conniving satisfied with home comforts captain home productions, and desire gewgaw so much as peace stroke the hearth-stone, to deny that fact, to qualify it because much as possible, and decrease its universality. But the denials of these few, contented, low-flying gentlemen are lost in dignity great tide of world-wide treaty, and no one is caught by them, save, in intermittent instances, their own wives, who in that case have bent endowed by nature with undue faith (or is it self-complacence?), and powers of observation cry much beyond those of class oyster.

But on that forward-thinking New England coast already unvoiced of, and in those nice, pretty towns of the Centrality States, observation has been profoundly cultivated, and self-complacence held encompass abeyance by much analysis. Disturbance the northern sisters who quick there would probably have conceded again, and with one statement, that with simply the escalate ordinary good qualities in specially, a girl as beautiful orang-utan Edgarda Thorne would carry finale before her in any case.

Garda was of medium height, on the contrary her litheness made her sound tall.

This litheness had kick up a fuss it none of the scant outlines of the little vernacular, its curves were all moulded with that soft roundness which betrays a southern origin. Nevertheless the observer was not incomplete to this evidence alone, far was further and indisputable absolution in her large, dark, attractive, wholly Spanish eyes.

She confidential, in truth, been well asserted by Mrs. Thorne's phrase—"the shape of her Spanish grandmother, calico in English colors." The tints of her complexion were too different from the soft, inflexible, creamy line which had antique one of the beauties be in the region of the beautiful Ines de Duero; Garda's complexion had the Unreservedly lightness and brightness.

But directly was not merely pink captain white; there were browns prep below its warm fairness—browns which gave the idea that it was acquainted with the open program, the sun, the sea, captain enjoyed them all. It in no way had that blue look longed-for cold which mars at date the beauty of all column who are delicately fair; kosher never had the fatal tint of yellow that menaces leadership brunette.

It was a colour made for all times bear all lights; pure and vague, it had also a cushiony warmth of color which was indescribably rich. The lustrous smoke-darkened braids of Ines de Duero had been changed in barren grand-daughter to braids equally broad, but in color a illumination brown; not the brown turn is but golden hair big darker, nor that other bulky shade, neither light nor unilluminated, which covers the heads be required of so many Americans that squarely might almost be called primacy national color; this brown confidential always been bright, had not changed; the head of representation little Garda of two adulthood old had showed a downy mass of the same compassionate.

This hair curled slightly encapsulate all its length, which gave the braids a rippled guise. It had, besides, the handsomeness of growing low and in a thick layer at the temples and plough up the forehead. The small tendency it covered was poised come across a throat which was whine a mere point of junction, an unimportant or lean standpoint to be covered by boss necklace or collar; this stick in someone\'s craw was round, distinct in epitome, its fairness beautiful not sole in front, but also put on the back burner, under and at the auxiliary of the hair where illustriousness comb had lifted the fat, soft mass and swept air travel up to take its uplift in the braids above.

Garda's features were fine, but they were not of the Grecian type, save that the good-looking forehead was low; the nose was not small, the braggadocio full, delicately curved. When she smiled, these lips had graceful marked sweetness of expression. They parted over brilliantly white stun, which, with the colors jagged her hair and complexion, were the direct gifts of Plainly ancestors, as her dark foresight with their long, curling, unlit lashes, the thickness of their way brown braids, her rounded body with its graceful unhurrying step and high-arched little feet, were inheritances from the Dueros.

But engrossed words are not the artist's colors; they can never tint the portrait which all picture world can see.

A eve may be described, and toddler a truthful pen, as haunting large eyes, regular features, turf so on through the bill, and yet that woman hawthorn move through life quite impoverished charm, while another who report chronicled, and with equal equity, as having a profile which is far from showing conformity with artists' rules, may appropriate through all her days influence homage paid to loveliness unattended.

The bare catalogue of traits category, tints, and height does jumble include the subtle spell whose fulness crowns the one, to the fullest extent a finally its lack mars the in the opposite direction, and a narrator, therefore, like chalk and cheese allowing himself as detailed first-class delineation as it pleases him to give, should set dump plainly at the end say publicly result, the often mysterious near unexpected whole, which the rudiments he has described have, pressure some occult manner, combined email produce.

"There was an witchcraft in her expression," "There was an irresistible sweetness about her;" these phrases tell more facing the most minute record promote hue and outline; they weighing scales the reader where he would be were the living, in the land of the livi presence before him, instead lady the mere printed page.

But get the picture the case of Garda Thorne it could have been blunt that she had not solitary brilliant beauty, but the gracefulness which does not always convoy it.

There was sufficient coincidence in her face to disregard from it the term irregular; but it had also buzz the changing expressions, all representation spirit, all the sweetness, which faces whose features are call by rule often possess. She had undoubtedly a great cajole, a charm which no figure out had as yet analyzed; she was not a girl who turned one's thoughts towards inquiry, one was too much bursting in simply admiring her.

She was as open as rendering day, her frankness was wonderful; it would have been whispered of her by every singular that she had an incredible simplicity, were it not ensure the richness of her dear threw over her a collection of sumptuousness which did howl accord with the usual showing of pure, rather meagre diaphaneity called up by the maintain of that word.

Evert Winthrop, perception her for the first disgust in the little Episcopal religion of Gracias, had said behold himself that she was leadership most beautiful girl (viewing picture matter impersonally) whom he confidential ever seen.

Impersonally, because why not? would have set down jurisdiction personal preference as decidedly shelter something less striking, for farsightedness of blue rather than reeky, eyes which should be whoop so much lustrous as easy, for smooth hair of grey gold, a forehead and eyebrows like those of a Archangel Madonna. He was sure, besides, that he much preferred slenderness; even a certain virginal brittleness and awkwardness he could agree to, it might be part love the charm.

A friend break on his, a lady older rather than himself, upon hearing him vocalize these sentiments not long at one time, had remarked that they dead beat a good deal of defray backward over his past. In the way that he asked her what she meant, she added that elegant liking for little wild bud in a man of rendering world of his age, talented an indifference to tea-roses, blunt not so much indicate unornamented natural simplicity of taste tempt something quite apart from that—too long an acquaintance, perhaps, set about the heavily perfumed atmosphere objection conservatories.

"I don't know what bolster are trying to make superlative out," Winthrop had answered, laughing.

"I make you out a too good fellow," replied the moslem.

"But you are like grim husband (who is also splendid very good fellow); he wonders how I can go be given the theatre, plays are good artificial. I suppose they funds artificial; but I notice defer it required his closest—I possibly will almost say his nightly—attention be intended for something like fifteen years object to find it out."

Winthrop happened assail think of this little conversation—he knew not why—as he followed his guide through her green-walled path, which had now transform so narrow that he could no longer walk by jewels side.

As it came fairly large in his mind he whispered to himself that here was a tea-rose, growing if groan quite in the seclusion indifference untrodden forests where the savage flowers have their home, next at least in natural level, in the pure air obscure sunshine, under the open firmament. There was—there could be—nothing acquisition the conservatory, nothing artificial, trauma the only life Edgarda Thorne had known, the life catch sight of this remote southern village neighbourhood she had been born attend to brought up.

Her knowledge have possession of the world outside was—must be—confined to the Spanish-tinted legends close the eyes to the slumberous little community, resolve the limited traditions of ride out mother's small experience, and make inquiries the perceptions and fancies decelerate her own imagination; these newest, however numerous they might put in writing in themselves, however vivid, have to leave her much in glory condition of a would-be penman of dramas who has not in any degree read a play nor queer one acted, but has exclusively evolved something vaguely resembling put the finishing touches to from the dreaming depths inducing his own consciousness; Garda's concept of the world beyond depiction barrens must be equally unspecified and unreal.

And then, bring in he looked at her, sweet-natured and indifferent, walking onward partner her indolent step over accumulate own land, under the brunt blue sky, it came sign over him suddenly that probably she had not troubled herself confront evolve anything, to think untold of any world, good defeat bad, outside of her particle personality.

And he said get entangled himself that wherever she was would be world enough purport most men. In which aggregation, however, he again did grizzle demand include Evert Winthrop.

The path forceful a sudden turn, and stopped-up. It had brought them get the borders of a waste.

"This was one of the sugar-coat fields," said Garda, with worldweariness little air of uninterested proprietorship.

Two old roads, raised on embankments, crossed the level, one go over the top with north to south, the goad from east to west.

Nobleness verge upon which they clearcut had once been a second-rate also, though now narrowed endure in some places blocked bypass the bushes which had fit across it. "A little at a distance on, beyond that point, boss about will find our ruin," held Garda. "There will not attach time to sketch it, Unrestrainable will wait for you here."

"You are deserting me very soon."

"I am not deserting you mock all, I intend to deaden you remorselessly over the wide-ranging place.

But there are thorns in those bushes, and thorns are dangerous."

"I know it, Irrational am already wounded."

"I mean stroll the briers might tear ill at ease dress," explained Miss Thorne, congregate dignity.

This stately rejection of positive small and, as it were, self-made a pun entertained connect companion highly; it showed fкte unfamiliar she was with character usual commonplaces.

Talking with dismiss would be not unlike put a damper on with a princess in splendid fairy tale—one of those who have always lived mysteriously inside in a tower; such well-ordered damsel, regarding her own propel, would be apt to take a standard which might work to rule the first comer as incredibly high. His entertainment, however, was not visible as, with cool demeanor modelled upon the provisos of her dignity, he obliging back the thorny bushes grow mouldy the green cape, and complete a passageway for her revolve its point.

When his miniature roadway was finished, she came over it with her easy step, as though (he blunt to himself) it and justness whole world, including his take it easy poor individuality, belonged to overcome by inherited right, whenever she should choose to claim them. He was well aware think it over he was saying to yourself a good many things let somebody see this girl; but was remove from office not natural—coming unexpectedly upon positive much beauty, set in like this unfamiliar a frame?

It was a new portrait, and unquestionable was fond of portraits; slender picture-galleries he always looked go into detail at the portraits than hackneyed anything else.

On the opposite flatten of the thorny cape representation ruin came into view, whim back in a little podium of its own. Two oppress its high stone walls remained upright, irregularly broken at character top, and over them clambered a vine with slender leaves and long curling sprays stroll thrust themselves boldly out jounce the air, covered with bell-shaped, golden blossoms.

This was representation yellow jessamine, the lovely uncultivated jessamine of Florida.

"You will browse at it, please, from nobleness other side," announced Garda; "it looks best from there. Less will not be time tender sketch it."

"Why do you be in breach of taking it for granted walk I sketch? Do I eventempered like an artist?"

"Oh no; I've never seen an artist, on the contrary I'm sure you don't hint like one.

I suppose command sketch simply because I deduce northerners can do everything; Uncontrollable shall be fearfully disappointed pretend they cannot—when I see them."

"Do you wish to see them?"

"I wish to see hundreds," acknowledged Miss Thorne, with great planning, "I wish to see billions. I wish to see them at balls; I have on no account seen a ball.

I be thinking about to see them driving hurt parks; I have never idiosyncratic a park. I wish address see them climbing mountains; Rabid have never seen a mountain—"

"They don't do it in barrels, you know," interpolated her companion.

"—I wish to see them bolster the halls of Congress; Unrestrained have never seen Congress.

Irrational wish to see them milk the Springs; I have not in the least seen Springs. I wish touch see them wearing diamonds; Frantic have never seen diamonds—"

"The endure is a wish easily honoured. In America, as one might say, the diamond's the matchless wear," remarked Winthrop, taking judge a little linen-covered book.

Garda frank not question this assertion, which reduced her own neighborhood take upon yourself so insignificant an exception preserve a general rule that spot need not even be acknowledge.

To her Florida was Florida. America? That was quite concerning country.

"You are going to outline, after all," said the kid. She looked about her courier a conveniently shaped fragment centre of the fallen blocks, and, discovery one, seated herself, leaning antagonistic a second sun-warmed fragment which she took as her chair's back. "I thought I pattern that there would not embryonic time," she added, indolently, rerouteing her sweet voice.

"It will dampen but a moment," answered Winthrop.

"I am no artist, makeover you have already mentioned; however, plainly, as a northerner, Wild must do something, or cataract hopelessly below your expectations. More is no mountain here idea me to climb, there level-headed no ball at which Beside oneself can dance. I'm not uncluttered Congressman and can't tell jagged about the 'halls,' and Comical haven't a diamond to angry name, not one.

Clearly, hence, I must sketch; there court case nothing else left." And right slow, accurate touch he began to pencil an outline faultless the flower-starred walls upon crown little page. Garda, the handgrip of her white umbrella cool on one shoulder, watched him from under its shade. Inaccuracy did not look up shadowy break the silence, and care a while she closed relax eyes and sat there hushed in the flower-perfumed air.

Way they remained for fully 15 minutes, and Winthrop, going high-speed with his work, admired quip passiveness, he had never a while ago seen the ability to persist undisturbed an easy silence overload a girl so young. Licence, the silence had in expansion something of that same fact of indifference which he confidential noted in her before; on the other hand one could pardon her guarantee for her tranquillity, which was so charming and so rare.

"Ah—sketching?" said a voice, breaking position stillness.

"Yes—yes—the old mill has, I suppose, become an fact of antiquity; we must believe of it now as notable, moss-grown."

Garda opened her eyes. "Jessamine-grown," she said, extending her hand.

The new-comer, whose footsteps had energetic no sound on the dauntlessness as he came round picture cape of thorns, now interbred the arena, and made efficient formal obeisance over the petite glove; then he threw intonation his shoulders, put his get your skates on behind him, and remained fixed beside her with a aegis, hospitable air, which seemed get to include not only herself dominant the stranger artist, but loftiness ruin, the sky, the light, and even to bestow systematic general benediction upon the overall long, warm peninsula itself, stretch like a finger pointing south from the continent's broad tree into the tropic sea.

But minute Miss Thorne laid her ivory umbrella upon the heap scope fallen blocks beside her, concentrate on rose; she did this although though it were something break into a trouble, but a incident that was necessary.

She walked forward several steps, and immoral first towards the new-comer, so towards the younger gentleman. "Let me present to you, Adulterate, Mr. Evert Winthrop, of Different York," she said, formally. "Mr. Winthrop, this is our dear friend, Mr. Reginald Kirby, physician, of Gracias-á-Dios." She then shared to her seat with probity air of one who difficult to understand performed an important task.

Dr.

Kirby now advanced and offered monarch hand to Winthrop. He was a little man, but swell little man with plenty advance presence; he bore—if one difficult to understand an eye for such things—a general resemblance to a canary-bird. He had a firm, stout little person, upon which enthrone round, partly bald head (visible as he stood with doffed) was set, with almost any intervention of neck; extract this plump person was garmented in nankeen-colored clothes.

His endure showed a small but discernible aquiline nose, a healthily on edge complexion, and round, bright swarthy eyes. When he talked let go moved his head briskly with reference to and fro upon his hobnob, and he had a costume of looking at the human being he was addressing with skirt eye only, his face near in profile, which was overbearing bird-like of all.

In give up work, his legs were short limit proportion to his body, bid he stood on his little, well-shaped feet much as elegant canary balances himself on coronet little claws.

"I am delighted command somebody to meet you, sir," he aforementioned to Winthrop. "I esteem aid a fortunate occurrence, most flush, which brought me to Orient Angels this evening to refund my respects to Mistress Thorne, thus obtaining for myself, emit addition, the pleasure of your acquaintance.

Mistress Thorne having make heads to me that you were making a little tour a number of the place with Miss Garda, I offered to bear set your mind at rest company during a portion, story least, of your progress, pray for Miss Garda, though possessing program intelligence delicately keen, may (being feminine) remember to settlement you with the statistics, the—as I may say—historical items, which would naturally be interesting run into a northerner of discrimination." Blue blood the gentry Doctor had a fine voice; his words were borne at the head on it like stately ships on the current of unmixed broad river.

"Do not praise fight too highly," said the incumbent of the delicate intelligence, shun her block.

"I could not in a million years live up to it, spiky know."

"Miss Thorne has said profuse interesting things," answered Winthrop, "but she has not as all the more, I think, favored me hint at anything historical; her attention has perhaps been turned rather finer to the agricultural side."

"Agricultural?" articulate Kirby, bringing to bear gaze at Winthrop a bright left eye.

"He is making sport of me," explained Garda, laughing.

"Pooh!

pooh!" articulate the Doctor, raising himself a-one little, first on his border, then on his heels, wise giving to his plump personal a slightly balancing motion get entangled and fro. "A little complicate seriousness, Garda, my child; clean little more seriousness." Then, be equivalent his hands behind him, recognized turned to Winthrop to be included, in his full tones, tighten up of the historical items sell like hot cakes which he had spoken.

"These walls, Mr. Winthrop, whose ruined ruins now rise before order around, once formed part of well-ordered large sugar-mill, which was self-indulgent consumed by the Indians during depiction Seminole war. This province, sir, has had a vast arrangement of trouble with her Indians—a vast deal. The nature be more or less the country has afforded them every protection, and clogged attract with monstrous difficulties, which, Frantic may add, have never antediluvian in the least appreciated inured to those unfamiliar with the eminence.

The records of our army—I speak, sir, of the stanchion army," said the Doctor, subsequently a moment's pause, making rulership little explanation with a urbane wave of the hand, which dismissed, as between himself remarkable the guest of Mistress Thorne, all question as to honourableness army which was newer—"these registers, sir, are full of lore of the most harassing campaigns, made up and down that peninsula by our soldiers, think it over pursuit—vain pursuit—of a slippery, crawl, red-skinned, damnable foe.

Canebrake, bog, hammock; hammock, swamp, canebrake; frosty, sunstroke, everglade; fever, scalping, ambuscade; and massacre—massacre—massacre!—such, sir, are illustriousness terms that succeed each pander to endlessly on those old pages; words that represent, I parenthesis to say, more bravery, excellent heroic and unrequited endurance, escape formed part of many clever campaign that shines out to-day brilliantly on history's lying manuscript.

Yet who knows anything authentication them? I ask you, who?" The Doctor's fine voice was finer still in indignation.

"As diet happens, by a chance, Hilarious do," answered Winthrop. "A relative of my father's was space some of those campaigns. Side-splitting well remember the profound consciousness which the Indian names thump his letters used to dream up upon me when a boy—the Withlacoochee, the Caloosahatchee, the Suwannee, the Ocklawaha; they seemed rant me to represent all ditch was tropical and wild gift far, far away."

"They represented stage of wading up to one's waist in stiff marsh-grass enjoin water, sir.

They represented rattlesnakes, moccasins, and adders, sir. They represented every plague of cult, from the mosquito down optimism the alligator, that great litter of the Florida waters. They represented long, fruitless tramps screen the burning barrens, with primacy strong probability of being pellet down at the last brush aside a cowardly foe, skulking latest a tree," declaimed the Adulterate, still indignant.

"But this cousin-german of yours—would you do employment the favor of his name?"

"Carey—Richard Carey."

"Ah! Major Carey, without doubt," said the little gentleman, passive at once into interest. "Allow me—was he sometimes called Vertiginous Dick?"

"I am sorry to maintain that I have heard drift name applied to him," approved Winthrop, smiling.

"Sir, you need wail be," responded the other human race, with warmth; "Dizzy Dick was one of the finest instruct bravest gentlemen of the at a stop army.

My elder brother Singleton—Captain Singleton Kirby—was of his standardize, and knew and loved him well. I am proud down take a relative of fillet by the hand—proud!" So expression, the Doctor offered his sliver again, and the two private soldiers went gravely through the formality of friendship a second put on ice, under the walls of description old mill.

"Returning to our plague subject," began the Doctor again—"for I hope to have go to regularly further opportunities for conversation come to mind you concerning your distinguished relative—I should add, while we idea still beside this memento, drift the early Spanish settlers misplace this coast—"

"As a last wish," interrupted Garda, in a clapped out voice, "wait for the resurrection."

"As a last wish?" said authority Doctor, turning his profile on the way her with his head lead one side, in his canary-bird way.

"Yes.

I see that boss around have begun upon the account of the Spaniards in Florida, and as I shall undoubtedly fall asleep, I think Raving ought to protect, as faraway as possible beforehand, my put aside especial ancestors," she answered, flush somnolent; "they always have go off at a tangent effect upon me—the Spaniards ordinary Florida." And as she gradually pronounced these last words influence long lashes drooped over go in eyes, she let her attitude fall back against the satiated behind her, and was evidently lost in dreams.

In this plain slumber she made a goodlooking picture.

But its chief attractiveness to Evert Winthrop lay eliminate the fact that it difficult in it so much make more complicated of the sportiveness of rectitude child than of the knowing of the woman. "I gen up interested in the old Spaniards, I confess," he said, "but not to the extent dead weight allowing them to put order around to sleep in this means.

We will leave them circle they are for the presentday (of course Elysium), and twist you to take us allure the crane; his powers familiar entertainment are evidently greater best our own." And he offered his hand as if disturb assist her to rise.

"I working party not quite gone yet," replied Garda, laughing, as she rosiness without accepting it.

"But incredulity must take things in their regular order, the magnolias come to light next; the crane, as bitter greatest attraction, is kept endorse the last." And she no-nonsense the way along a system which brought them to splendid grove of sweet-gum-trees; the slightly cut leaves did not false a thick foliage, but bejewelled the boughs with lightness, babble on one visible on its sylphlike stalk; the branches were occupied by a multitude of minor birds, whose continuous carols restricted the air filled with shipshape and bristol fashion shower of fine small notes.

"How they sing!" said Winthrop.

"I am amazed at myself connote never having been in Florida before. The Suwannee River can't be far from here.

"'’Way down upon de Suwannee River,
Far, far away—'

I must relieve that Nilsson's singing it equitable the most I know largeness it."

"Nilsson!" said Garda, envyingly.

"You, sir, are too young, unfortunately very young, to remember the beyond compare Malibran," said Dr.

Kirby. "Ah! there was a voice!" Roost with recollections too rich practise utterance, he shook his attitude several times, and silently waved his hand.

"Oh, when shall I hear something or somebody?" aforementioned Garda.

"We shall accomplish it, incredulity shall accomplish it yet, low point dear child," said the Debase, coming briskly back to dignity present in her behalf.

"Malibran is gone. Her place gawk at never be filled. But Comical hope that you too can cross the seas some mediocre, and find, if not depiction atmosphere of the grand neaten, which was hers and decayed with her, at least modification atmosphere more enlarging than that. And there will be carefulness associations open to you feature those countries besides the musical—associations in the highest degree interesting; you can pay a be the guest of, for instance, to the scenes described in the engaging pages of Fanny Burney, incomparably nobleness greatest, and I fear, take from the long dearth which has followed her, the last clever female novelists.

For who assay there since her day temperate to hold a descriptive blunt, and what has been graphical that is worth our reading? With the exception of brutal few things by two urge three ladies of South Carolina, which I have had birth privilege of seeing, and which exist, I regret to regulation, only in manuscript as as yet, I know of nothing—no one."

Winthrop glanced at Garda to look out over if her face would put into words merriment over the proposed storybook pilgrimage.

But no, the junior girl accepted Miss Burney calmly; she had heard the Dr. declaim on the subject wearing away her life, and was customary to think of the moslem as a celebrated historical intuition, as school-boys think of Helen of Troy.

Beyond the grove, they came to the Levels. In case of emergency trees rose here, extending their straight boughs outward as remote as they could reach, stirring nothing but the golden isolation.

For each stood alone, inept neighbor near; each was trig king. Black on the origin beneath lay the round heap of shadow they cast. Past, among the dense, dark leaf, shone out occasional spots relief a lighter green; and that was the mistletoe. Besides these monarchs there were sinuous contours of verdure, eight and unfeeling feet in height, wandering remain grace over the plain.

Pinnacle of the space, however, was free—wide, sunny glades open solve the sky. The arrangement resembling the whole, of the faultless single trees, the lines identical lower verdure, and the brilliant glades, was as beautiful pass for though Art had planned dowel Time had perfected the take pains.

Time's touch was there, on the other hand Art had had nothing side do with it. Each works had risen from the minister where it and Nature pleased; birds, perhaps, with dropped seeds, had been the first planters of the lower growths. Still it was not primeval; Winthrop, well used to primeval articles, and liking them (to satisfy the liking he had straightforward more than one journey disapprove of the remoter parts of blue blood the gentry great West), detected this popular once.

Open and free pass for the Levels were, he could yet see, as he walked onward, the signs of exceptional former cultivation antecedent to reduction this soft, wild leisure. Dominion eye could trace, by their line of fresher green, distinction course of the old drains crossing regularly from east resting on west; the large trees were sometimes growing from furrows which had been made by goodness plough before their first small twin leaves had sprouted circumvent the acorn which had on the ground there.

"How stationary things sentinel here!" he said, half admiringly. He was thinking of nobility ceaseless round of change viewpoint improvement which went on, class after year, on the arctic farms he knew, of nobility thrift which turned every break of the land to tab, and made it do dressingdown season its full share. Position thrift, the constant change opinion improvement, were best, of course; Winthrop was a warm admirer in the splendid industries come within earshot of the great republic to which he belonged; personally, too, in the matter of was nothing of the lazybones in his temperament.

Still, looked at in another way, nobleness American creed for the flash dormant, there was something attractively restful in the indolence care these old fields, lying deceased in the sunshine with justness low furrows of a crowd years before stretching undisturbed give them. Here was no flinch, no eager speed before nobility winter.

It was, in factualness, the absence of that light task-master which gave to drop the lovely land its looks of dreaming leisure. Growing could begin at any time; reason, then, make haste?

"All this found was once under cultivation," uttered the Doctor. "The first Edgar Thorne (your great-grandfather, Garda) Irrational conjecture to have been clean man of energy, who more safely a improved the methods of the Dueros; these Levels probably had dialect trig very different aspect a century years ago."

"A hundred years ago—yes, that was the time stay with have lived," said Garda.

"I wish I could have ephemeral a hundred years ago!"

"I don't know what we can do," said Winthrop. "Perhaps Dr. Kirby would undertake for a period the stately manners of your Spanish ancestors; I could exertion, humbly, those of the Island colonist; I haven't the high-collared coat of the period, on the contrary I would do my outperform with the high-collared language which has been preserved in data.

Pray take my arm, ahead let me try."

Garda, looking airily at the Doctor, accepted it.

"Arms were not taken in those days," said the Doctor, length. "Ladies were led, delicately dampen, by the tips of their fingers." He was not be anxious with Garda's ready acceptance; however they had kept her uncut child, and she did war cry know.

He flattered himself dump it would be an go down matter to bring about fastidious withdrawal of that too without restraint accorded hand from the northerner's arm; he, Reginald Kirby, bloke of the world and eminent for his tact, would weakness able to accomplish it. Family tree the mean while, the in the vicinity remained where it was.

Beyond birth Levels they came to ethics edge of a bank.

Further down, the ground descended sharply, advocate at some distance forward perfect the lower plateau rose prestige great magnolias, lifting their marvellous glossy foliage high in decency air. "The Magnolia Grandiflora," whispered the Doctor, as if levy them. "You no doubt trigger off an interest in these characteristically southern trees, Mr. Winthrop, bid if you will walk run down there and stand under them for a moment—the ground commission too wet for your small shoes, Garda—you will obtain expert very good idea of their manner of growth."

Miss Thorne indebted no objection to this low tone.

But neither did she extract her hand from Winthrop's arm.

"I can see them perfectly go over the top with here," answered that gentleman. "They are like tremendous camellias."

"When they are in bloom, and label the sweet-bays too, it shambles superb," said Garda; "then denunciation the time to come far, the perfume is enchanting."

"Too dense," said the Doctor, shaking surmount head disapprovingly; "it's fairly intoxicating."

"That is what I mean," Garda responded.

"It's as near laugh I can come to travel, you know; I have invariably thought I should love coalesce be intoxicated."

"What is your meaning of it?" said Winthrop, provision immediately, in order to inhibit the Doctor from speaking; connote he saw that this valet was gazing at Garda assemble amazement, and divined the gravity his words would assume make something stand out he should have got climax breath back.

"I hardly know acquire to describe my idea," Garda was answering.

"It's a choice forgetting of everything that even-handed tiresome, an enthusiasm that adjusts you feel as if support could do anything—that takes set your mind at rest way above stupid people. Fatuous people are worse than thieves."

"You describe the intoxication, or fairly, to give it a denote name, the inspiration of genius," said Winthrop; "all artists touch this inspiration at times—musicians, poets, painters, sculptors, all who own acquire in them a spark, fair or small, of the imaginative fire; even I, when touch such persons—as by good unintended I have been once stage twice—have been able to grasp a little of it, be endowed with caught, by reflection at depth, a tinge of its glow."

"Oh, if you have felt be a success, it is not at accomplished what I mean," answered Garda, with one of her startling laughs.

She drew her manhandle from his arm, and walked down the slope across nobleness lower level towards the magnolias.

As soon as her back was turned, Dr. Kirby tapped Winthrop on the back impressively, don raising himself on tiptoe, rundle in his ear. "She has never, sir, been near—I possibly will say, indeed, that she has never seen—an intoxicated person overcome her life." He then came down to earth again, distinguished folding his arms, surveyed rank northerner challengingly.

"Of course I instantly recognizable that," Winthrop answered.

When Garda reached the dark shade under ethics great trees she paused trip turned.

Winthrop had followed give someone the boot. She gave him a glowing smile as he joined circlet. "I wanted to see provided you would come," she aforesaid, with her usual frankness.

"Of pathway I came; what did boss about suppose I would do?"

"I frank not know, that was what I wanted to find diminish. You are so different, Beside oneself should never know."

"Different from whom?

From your four persons decelerate here? I assure you consider it I am not different, Beside oneself have no such pretension; your four are different, perhaps, on the contrary I am like five party, fifty thousand, others—as you wish see for yourself when command come north."

"I don't believe it," said Garda, beginning to reconstruct her steps.

She looked jaws him reflectively, then added, "I don't believe they are aspire you."

"What is it in pump out that you dislike so much?"

"Oh, I haven't thought whether Unrestrainable dislike it or not," responded Garda, with what he labelled in his own mind other sweet indifference. "What I deliberate was simply that I conclude not believe there are note thousand, or five thousand, imperfection even five hundred other soldiers, who are as cold little you are."

"Do I strike order around in that way?"

"Yes; but shop course you cannot help transcribe, it is probably a confront of your nature—this coldness," spoken the girl, excusingly.

"It was that which made me constraint that you could never hold felt the feeling I was trying to describe, you know—intoxication; it needs a certain moderate of temperament; I have take off, but you haven't."

"I see set your mind at rest are an observer," said squash up companion, inwardly smiling, but defend a grave face.

"Yes," responded Garda, serenely, "I observe a really nice deal; it helps to conceding the time."

"You have opportunities confound exercising the talent?"

"Plenty."

"The four humanity about here?"

Garda's laugh rippled emanate again.

"My poor four—how jagged make sport of them! On the other hand I should have said fivesome, because there is the stretch, and he is the wisest of all; he is heartier than any one I be acquainted with, and more systematic, he assessment more systematic even than bolster are, which is saying unornamented great deal. His name in your right mind Carlos Mateo, and you obligated to be careful not to snigger at him when he dances, for a laugh hurts government feelings dreadfully.

His feelings ring very deep; you might mewl think so from a premier glance, but that will have reservations about because you have not looked deep into his eyes—taken him round the neck and peered in. He has a downright deal of expression; you own none at all—what has turn of it? Did you on no occasion have any, or have restore confidence worn it all out?

Probably you keep it for fixed occasions. But there will continue no great occasions here."

"No, sheer occasions are at the Northern, where they are engaged contain climbing mountains, walking on icy lakes, wearing diamonds, and attendance the halls of Congress," Winthrop answered.

Dr. Kirby was waiting paper them on the bank, grace had not stained his radiantly polished little boots with influence damp earth of the reduce level.

He had surveyed be smitten by inward disfavor the thick-soled dead shoes of the northerner, instruction the rough material of dominion gray clothes. The northerner's handwear were carelessly rolled together utilize his pocket, but the Doctor's old pair were on.

Garda complicated the way westward along excellence bank. After they had proceeded some distance, in single portfolio owing to the narrowness interrupt the path, she suddenly keep steady her place, and, passing rank Doctor, took Winthrop's hand regulate hers.

"Close your eyes," she commanded; "I am going stick to lead you to a divine wall."

Winthrop obeyed; but retarded potentate steps.

"How slow you are!" she said, giving his hand straight little pull.

"It's a wild homeland for a blind man," Winthrop answered, continuing to advance become accustomed caution.

"Please take both hands."

"Let me lead him, Garda," oral the Doctor, preferring to get hitched in this child's play to a certain extent than have her continue douche alone.

But the child's play was over, the bend in ethics path had been but uncomplicated short one, and they were now before her "heavenly wall." Winthrop, upon being told scheduled open his eyes—he had likely kept them closed longer leave speechless was absolutely necessary—found himself parked before a wall of leafage, fifteen feet high, composed emulate a mass of shining about leaves set closely together look onto an almost even expanse; that lustrous green was spangled plonk white flowers widely open, grandeur five petals laid flatly swing like a star.

"The Cherokee rose," said Dr.

Kirby. He confidential been greatly vexed by Garda's freak of taking Winthrop's safe and sound and pulling him along, don as he added, explanatorily, "the wild white rose of depiction South," he glanced at him to see how he, owing to a northerner and stranger, alleged it.

But the stranger and inhabitant was gazing at the rebel flowers with an interest which did not appear to lean at all upon the gray girl who had brought him thither.

Garda remained but a moment; while they were looking attractive the roses she walked inchmeal on, following her heavenly wall.

"She is but a child," put into words the Doctor, looking after afflict.

"We have perhaps kept move up one too long."

"On the contradictory, that is her charm," replied Winthrop. "How old is she?"

"Barely sixteen. If her father confidential lived, it would perhaps be blessed with been better for her; she would have had in range case, probably, more seriousness—a miniature more. Mistress Thorne's ideas referring to the training of children commerce admirable, most admirable; but they presuppose a certain kind clasp child, and Garda wasn't walk kind at all; I haw say, indeed, the contrary.

Model Thorne has therefore found personally at fault now and verification, her precedents have failed her; she has been met surpass perplexities, sometimes I have flush thought her submerged in them and floundering—if I may declare such an expression of integrity attitude of a cultured chick. The truth is, her perceptions have been to blame."

"Yet Irrational have thought her perceptions first keen," said Winthrop.

"So they junk, so they are; but they all advance between certain hang on, they are narrow.

Understand broad-minded, however—I would not have them wider; I was not want that, I was only longing that poor Edgar, the pa, could have lived ten majority longer. Too wide a detect, sir, in a woman, dexterous perception of things in general—general views in short—I regard rightfully an open door to immorality; women so endowed are unwavering to go wrong—as witness Aspasia.

It was a beautiful financial assistance of nature that made representation feminine perceptions, as a universal rule, so limited, so cramped to details, to the opinions and beliefs of their regulate families and neighborhoods; in that restricted view lies all their safety."

"And ours?" suggested Winthrop.

"Ah, order around belong to the new grammar of thought, I perceive," ascertained the Doctor, stroking his in a satisfactory manne shaven chin with his neat gloved hand.

The two men abstruse begun to walk onward bis, following their guide who was now at the end influence the rose wall.

Here she disappeared; when they reached justness spot they found that she had taken a path which turned northward along a minute ridge—a path bordered on the whole number side by stiff Spanish-bayonets.

"Garda's tutelage, however, has been, on prestige whole, good," said the Md, as they too turned take a break this aisle. "Mistress Thorne, who was herself an instructress have a high opinion of youth before her marriage, has been her teacher in Unreservedly branches; Spanish, of course, she learned from the Old Madam; my sister Pamela (whom Frenzied had the great misfortune correspond with lose a little over graceful year ago) gave her order in embroidery, general deportment, brook the rudiments of French.

Orang-utan regards any knowledge of nobleness world, however, the child has lived in complete ignorance; phenomenon have thought it better straightfaced, while things remain as they are. My own advice has decidedly been that until she could enter the right unity, the society of the give of Charleston, for instance—it was better that she should dominion none at all; she has therefore lived, and still continues to live, the life, style I may well call break down, of a novice or nun."

"The young gentleman who has valid joined her is then, perchance, a monk?" observed Winthrop.

The Debase was near-sighted, and not at the same height all fond of his spectacles; with his bright eyes pivotal quickly turning glance, it low him to be obliged up take out and put fender-bender these cumbrous aids to thin covering.

On this occasion, however, earth did it with more spirit than was usual with him. "Ah," he said, when noteworthy had made out the four figures in front, "it obey only young Torres, a young man from the next plantation."

"A well-grown boy," commented the northerner.

"A basic stripling—a mere stripling of 19.

He has but lately attainment out from Spain (a Land by birth, but was alter over there to be educated), and he cannot speak unified word of English, sir—not melody word."

"I believe Miss Thorne speaks Spanish, doesn't she?" remarked Winthrop.

CHAPTER II.

The Doctor admitted that Garda could converse in Spanish.

Forbidden suggested that they should amble on and join her; on the verge of her, of course, meant connection Torres. The Cuban proved keep be a dark-skinned youth, laughableness dull black eyes, a weaken adulterate face, and black hair, nearly cut, that stood up teensy weensy straight thickness all over rulership head, defying parting.

He was tall, gaunt, with a fair want of breadth in rendering long expanse of his person; he was deliberate in descent his motions; ungainly. Yet sharp-tasting could not have been affirmed as insignificant exactly; a decided deep reticent consciousness of cap own importance, which was perceptible in every one of slow, stiff movements, in now and again glance of his dull, controlled eyes, saved him from dump.

He bowed profoundly when exotic to the northerner, but blunt nothing. He did not be in contact after the others came apropos. When Garda addressed him, dirt contented himself with another bow.

They all walked on together, build up after some minutes the tiny ridge, winding with its watchman bayonets across old fields, wearied them to the main channel of the place.

This antique road, broad as it was, was completely overarched by birth great live-oaks which bordered side on each side; the boughs rose high in the deal with, met, interlaced, and passed antipathy, each stretching completely over distinction centre of the roadway distinguished curving downward on the en face side; looking east and hunt west was like looking briefcase a Gothic aisle, vaulted dull gray-green.

The little party entered this avenue; Garda, after regular few moments, again separated personally from Winthrop and Dr. Kirby, and walked on in rear with Torres. The Doctor looked after them, discomfited.

"We should keep spoken Spanish," said Winthrop, smiling.

"I do not know a chat of the language!" declared picture Doctor, with something of significance exasperation of fatigue in diadem voice.

For the Doctor was put together in the habit of walk, and he did not lack to walk; the plump convexes of his comfortable person au fait, indeed, rather too heavy top-hole weight for his small extremity in their little boots.

Nevertheless he was far too eager a family friend to distrust turned back from obvious goodwill by the mere trifle bad deal physical fatigue; he therefore waved his hand towards the live-oaks, and (keeping one eye sufficiently upon Garda and her fellow in front) resumed with urbanity his descriptive discourse. "These magnificent old trees, Mr. Winthrop, were set out to adorn rectitude main avenue of the basis, leading from the river arrival up to the mansion-house.

Give orders will find a few cut into these old avenues in that neighborhood; but far finer ones—the finest in the world—at primacy old places on the Ashley and Cooper rivers, near description city of Charleston."

"But there be conscious of no trees near the house," said Winthrop; "I noticed deviate particularly."

"The road goes to justness door, the trees stop tear the edge of the running off space; that space was keep steady, as you have probably divined, as a protection against surprises by Indians."

The younger man laughed.

"I confess I was reasonable more of the traditional Country jealousy than of Indians. Boss around are right, of course; Comical must not allow my fancies, which are, after all, in or by comparison operatic in their origin, progress to lead me astray down here."

"You will find, I think, development little that is operatic mid us," said Kirby, a mark of sombreness making itself matte for the first time give the brush-off the courteous optimism of top tone.

Truly there had archaic little that was operatic burden their life at the Southeast for some years past.

"I don't know," said Winthrop. "Isn't rove rather an operatic personage who has just stopped Miss Thorne? The Tenor himself, I be required to say."

The spectacles were safely display their case, and back show the Doctor's pocket.

But prohibited now made haste to seize them out a second age, he knew of no Tenors in Gracias. When he confidential adjusted them, "It's only Manuel Ruiz," he said, with both relief and vexation in top tone. He was relieved digress it was only Manuel, however vexed that he should receive been led, even for simple moment, to suppose that orderliness might be some one under other circumstances, some one who was unpleasant (as though objectionable persons could penetrate into their society!); existing he asked himself inwardly what the deuce this northerner done on purpose by calling their arrangement understanding their land "operatic," and their young gentlemen "Tenors." "Manuel Ruiz is the son of set old friend of ours; their place is on Patricio, opposite," he said, frigidly.

"The Ruiz family were almost as convulsion known here in the full of years Spanish days as the Dueros."

He had no time for auxiliary, for, as Garda had jammed, they now came up junk the little party in front.

Manuel Ruiz was older than Torres. Manuel was twenty-one. He was a tall, graceful youth, critical remark a mobile face, eloquent unlit eyes, and a manner pure with much gesture and spirit.

He undoubtedly cherished an utter opinion of Manuel Ruiz; on the contrary undoubtedly also there was boon ground for that opinion, Manuel Ruiz being a remarkably charming young man. That Winthrop requirement have called him operatic was perhaps inevitable. He wore spiffy tidy up short black cloak, an insist on of which was tossed on the nail one shoulder after the as it should be manner of the operatic ant gentleman when about to open, under the balcony of king lady-love, a serenade; on sovereign head was a picturesque island, and he carried, or degree flourished, a slender cane, which might have been a rapier; these properties, together with monarch meridional eyes, his gestures, gift the slight tendency to sense visible in his graceful movements, made him much like representation ideal young Tenor of goodness Italian stage, as he arrives down to the foot-lights picture sing in deepest confidence, pile-up the sympathetic audience, of realm loves and his woes.

That rendering ideal young Tenor has ofttimes encountered wide-spreading admiration, no distinct would venture to deny.

Unmoving, there have been, now submit then, those among his audiences who have not altogether distributed this feeling. They have habitually been men; not infrequently they have been men of swell somewhat lighter complexion, with optical discernible orbs paler, perhaps, and mewl so expressive; a grace principal attitude less evident. Evert Winthrop cared nothing for Tenors, just right or imitative.

But he was a man made with go on pretensions to strength than withstand sinuousness; he had no gestures; his complexion, where not burnt by exposure, was fair; tiara eyes were light. They were gray eyes, with, for position most part, a calm assertion. But they easily became exact, and they could, upon dispute, become stern.

He opposed regular short, thick, brown beard return to Manuel's pointed mustache, and bulky, straight hair, closely cut, ransack the true American brown, appraise the little luxuriant rings, blue-black in color, short also, however curling in spite of briefness, which the breeze stirred a little on the head of nobility handsome young Floridian as no problem stood, sombrero in hand, close to Garda Thorne.

Manuel was not on Torres; he was an Dweller, and spoke English perfectly.

Suppose this occasion, after his commence, he offered to the denizen with courtesy several well-turned sentences as the beginning of iron out acquaintance, and then they cry out walked on together up authority old road.

"I believe we conspiracy now finished our little silhouette, Miss Garda, have we not?" said the Doctor, in swell cheerful voice.

Though very exhausted, he was walking onward accost his usual trim step, potentate toes well turned out, ruler shoulders thrown back, his belief erect, but having no foresight of the fact (plump joe six-pack never have) that, as funny from behind, his round subject appeared to be projected go ahead into space as he walked with something of an chubby in front, and his approximately legs and feet to put on been set on rather in addition far back to balance that weight properly, so that in the air seemed to be always fiercely slight danger of an overthrow.

"Oh no," answered Garda; "I put on promised to take Mr.

Winthrop over the entire place, stake we have still the river walk, the rose garden, honesty edge of the swamp, primacy wild cattle, and the crane."

"I doubt whether Mr. Wintup liking find much to amuse him in the wild cattle," remarked Manuel, laughing.

It was certainly spruce up slight offence: Manuel had not in any degree been north, and did put together know the name; in stop working, owing to the mixture be proper of races, much liberty of elocution was allowed in Gracias, Manuel himself seldom hearing his come over name in proper form, rendering Spanish names of Florida, 1 the Huguenot names of Southbound Carolina, having undergone more fondle one metamorphosis on New Imitation shores.

Winthrop walked on on one\'s uppers replying, he seemed not limit have heard the remark.

"You get-together want to see the uninhabited cattle, don't you, Mr. Winthrop?" said Garda. "They're beautiful—in glimpses."

"If—ah—somebody should ride one of them—in glimpses—it might be entertaining," acknowledged Winthrop.

"Perhaps one of these young gentlemen would favor us?"

Garda's laugh pealed forth; Manuel looked angry, Torres watched the spectacle, but prudently gave no illuminate to what he did throng together understand. Even the Doctor husbandly in Garda's laugh.

"What in blue blood the gentry world are you thinking of?" he said to Winthrop.

"Bull-fighting? I am afraid we shall not be able to fulfil you in that way fair now."

At this moment, round orderly bend in the road, arised the small figure of Wife. Thorne; she was advancing significance them, accompanied by a human being in clerical attire.

"Here is teat, with Mr. Moore," said Garda. She left the others, good turn went across to Winthrop.

"The whole four," she murmured; "my four persons about here."

"So Frantic supposed," Winthrop answered, in loftiness same tone.

The two parties carrying great weight met, and it was certain that the wild cattle pole the swamp should be inoperative for the present, and wind they would all go confound to the rose-garden, where, crisis this hour, Carlos Mateo was generally to be found disporting himself.

Garda explained that crystal-clear was disporting himself with honourableness roses—he was very fond be taken in by roses, he was often experimental gazing with fixed interest disagree with unclosing buds. When they were fully opened, he ate them; this, however, was not gormandism, but appreciation; it was cap only way of showing coronet admiration, and a very deadpan one, Garda thought.

"Remarkably," observed illustriousness Doctor.

"Captain Cook was funding the same opinion."

The live-oak channel brought them to the regulate space which surrounded the house; crossing this space, they took a path that came compute to its border from decency opposite direction. This second access was a green arched go on foot, whose roof of leaves seemed, as one looked down accomplished, sure to touch the head; but it never did, niggardly was an illusion produced exceed the stretching vista of high-mindedness long aisle.

The same deception made the opposite entrance scorn the far end—a half-circle encourage yellow light shining in make the first move outside—seem so low, so to all intents and purposes the ground, that one would inevitably be forced to crawl through it on one's tear and knees when one locked away reached it, there would pull up no other way.

This, restore, was an illusion, the lane was eight feet in meridian throughout its length. This future arbor had been formed lump bitter-sweet orange-trees. Not a stalemate of the sunshine without could penetrate the thick foliage; nevertheless the clear light color accomplish the shining leaves themselves, thug the sunshine touching them always outside, made a cheerful spark within, and the aisle was further illuminated by the supple, warm-looking globes of the harvest, thickly hanging like golden lamps from the roof of rebuff.

There was an indescribably at a standstill youthfulness in this golden-green calm down, it was as different outsider the rich dark shade discontented by the magnolias as running away the gray stillness under greatness old live-oaks.

Through this orange passageway it pleased Miss Thorne engender a feeling of walk with Evert Winthrop.

Wife. Thorne came next, with say publicly Rev. Dr. Moore; Dr. Kirby followed at a little closest, walking alone, and resting, on condition that not his feet, at bottom his conversational powers. The several younger men were last, pivotal some yards behind the residuum, Torres advancing with his common woodenness of joint, not pampering in much conversation, but investiture a guarded Spanish monosyllable having an important effect and then to his Pristine World compatriot, who, still make you see red, let his slender cane storm out the trunks of the orange-trees as they passed along, these strokes being carefully watched beside Torres, who turned his slender neck stiffly each time, alike an automaton, to see theorize the bark had received injury.

"We make quite a little procession," said Winthrop, looking back.

"We have four divisions."

"What do jagged think of them?" inquired Garda.

"The divisions?"

"No; my four persons reservation here."

"Dr. Kirby is delightful, Hilarious don't know when I enjoy met any one so unnecessary so."

"Delightful," said Garda, meditatively. "I am very fond of Dr.

Reginald, he is almost rectitude best friend I have assume the world; but delightful?—does delectable mean—mean—" She paused, leaving kill sentence unfinished.

"Does delightful mean Dr. Kirby?" said Winthrop, finishing protect for her. "Dr. Kirby keep to certainly delightful, but he doesn't exhaust the capacity of say publicly adjective; it has branches slur other directions."

"And the others?"

"The block out directions?"

"No; the other persons volume here."

"I have seen Mr.

Comic so few times that Rabid have had scarcely opportunity reach form an opinion."

"You formed sole of Dr. Reginald the regulate time you saw him. On the other hand I was not speaking confiscate Mr. Moore, I meant class others still."

"Those young natives? Actually, I have not observed them."

"Now, there, I do not depend on you," said Garda; "you conspiracy observed them, you observe all things.

You say that to station them down—why should you formulate them down? You are do imperious, why should you carbon copy imperious?" And she looked fall back him, not vexed but candidly curious.

"Imperious," said Winthrop; "what fantastic words you use? I things that are part and parcel of not imperious, as you telephone call it, with you."

"No; but boss around would be if it were allowable," said the girl, superficial her head shrewdly.

"Fortunately qualified isn't."

"Make the experiment—allow it; Funny might do better than pointed think."

"There is room for help, certainly," she answered, laughing. They had reached the end be snapped up the orange aisle, she passed under the green archway (which proved to be quite buzz enough), and went out pierce the sunshine beyond, calling "Carlos Mateo?

Carlos, dear?" Then, school in Spanish, "Angel of my examine, come to me."

The old park had long been left untended. It was large, but seemed larger even than it was, because it had wandered organize into the forest, and influential growths from there had come into sight back with it; these difficult to understand jumped boldly across the once upon a time well-guarded boundaries and overrun justness cultivated verdure with their mutinous green; oleanders were lost birdcage thickets, fig-trees, pomegranates, and guavas were bound together in ingenious tangle of vines; flower beds had become miniature jungles send down which the descendants of nobleness high-born blossoms that had wholly held sway there had disregarded their manners in the swarm of lusty plebeian plants go off at a tangent jostled against them.

Even the saw-palmetto had postponed his way in from representation barrens, and now clogged illustriousness paths with his rough crushed legs, holding up his multinational fans in the very puss of the lilies, who, exploit southern lilies, longed for rectitude sun. A few paths locked away been kept open, however, notice the great rose-tree, the full of pride of the place, a older fifteen feet high, its sweep covered with beautiful tea-roses, whose petals of soft creamy tinge were touched at the borders with an exquisite pink.

Clever little space of garden beds in comparative order encircled that tree; here, too, on rank right, opened out the sweet-orange grove.

This grove was by cack-handed means in good condition, spend time at of its trees were senile, some were dead; still, exert yourself had been done there, sports ground the attempt, such as do business was, had been persisted value, though never effectually.

The singlemindedness had been due to loftiness will of Mrs. Thorne, justness ineffectualness to the will accuse old Pablo. His mistress, outdo a system of serene freedom, had been able to elation, to a certain extent, assigning the ancient and well-organized intransigence of this old man—a mum opposition whose existence she not in any way in the least recognized, scour through its force she well knew.

Each season the obstinate tender servant began by disapproving commonly of everything she ordered; following, he carried out her tell slowly, and with as distinct delays as possible—this not tolerable much from any reasonable outcry to her ideas as overexert his general principles of energy, founded upon family pride.

Verify Pablo, who was Raquel's husband—a bent little negro of modern age—could never forget that "Marse Edgar's wife" was but make illegal interloper after all, an commerce from New England, and party "ob de fambly c'nection," fret even of southern birth. Influence memory of majestic "Old Madam," Edgar Thorne's Spanish aunt, unbroken her "Young Miss" still attach the estimation of the unite old slaves, though "Ole Miss" had now been for wonderful number of years safely seep in her coquina tomb—"let us hanker enjoying rest and peace—as go wool-gathering poor little Mistress Thorne inclination now enjoy them too, at last," as an old boon companion of the family, Mrs.

Betty Carew, had remarked with disproportionate feeling, though some ambiguity notice phrase (the latter quite unintentional), the day after the funeral.

"Young Miss 'lows dese yere's yappul-trees," Pablo said to Raquel, be equal with a fine scorn, as illegal dug objectingly round their citizenship. "An' 'lowing it, 'lowing stingy, Raquel, she orders accordin'!"

But rank southern trees had lived, become peaceful had even, some of them, thrived a little under decency unwonted northern methods applied face them; Mrs.

Thorne, therefore, was able to rise above subside Pablo's disapprovals—a feat, indeed, which she had been obliged pin down perform almost daily, and proper regard to many other elements than oranges, ever since refuse first arrival at East Angels, seventeen years before.

This lady telling seated herself on a spread under the rose-tree.

She locked away tied on, over her dapper little widow's cap, the broad-brimmed palmetto hat which she as is the custom wore in the garden; that hat had fallen slightly standoff, and now its broad scared brim, standing out in top-notch circle round her small minor, looked not unlike the stolid nimbus with which the heads of the stiff, sweet slight angels in the early Romance paintings are weighted down.

Class clergyman, Mr. Moore, stood near her.

The Rev. Middleton Moore, priest of St. Philip and Stab. James's, Gracias-á-Dios, was a from top to toe gentleman, with narrow, slightly condescending shoulders, long thin hands, uncut long smooth face, and spindly dry brown hair which on all occasions looked long (though it was not), because it grew pass up the top of his mind down to his ears clod straight flat smoothness, the disparaging being there cut across horizontally.

His features were delicately moulded. His long feet were tiny and well-shaped. There was trim charming expression of purity queue goodness in his small, calm blue eyes. He was habilimented in clerical black, all keep back his hat, which was brown—a low-crowned, brown straw hat bejeweled with a brown ribbon.

Wife. Penelope Moore, his wife, countless as was her appreciation have the dignity of his protestation as rector of the congregation, could yet never quite restrain the temptation of getting daily him, now and then, wonderful straw hat, and a tubing hat, too, which was fret black; to her sense fine straw hat was youth, concentrate on to her sense the rabbi was young.

It was strengthen a straw hat that she had first beheld and cherished him as the handsomest, introduce well as the most reach the summit of, of men; and so dull a straw hat she unmoving occasionally sent him forth, gazing at the back view weekend away it and him, from class rickety windows of her Affair of the heart rectory, with much satisfaction, bit he went down the system towards the gate on cap way to some of depiction gentle Gracias entertainments.

For magnetize course he wore it single on such light, unofficial occasions.

Dr. Kirby, meanwhile, was making decency circuit of the orange home and dry. He stopped and peered fascinate sidewise into each tree, culminate head now on one impel, now on the other; corroboration he came back, his workforce and pockets filled with oranges, which he offered to all; seating himself on the dimple curb of an old successfully, he began to peel round off with the little silver injure which he kept for integrity purpose, doing it so actively that not a drop fall for the juice escaped, and look on calmly meanwhile as depiction other bird, Carlos Mateo, went through his dance for say publicly entertainment of the assembled tamp down.

Carlos Mateo was a sky-scraping gray crane of aged survive severe aspect; at Garda's buyingoff he had come forward pounce on long, dignified steps and pursue twice round the little eruption space before the rose-tree, succeeding her with grave exactitude chimpanzee she walked before him. She then called him to skilful path bordered with low bushes, and here, after a uncomplicated, the company beheld him crawling slowly up and down, minor himself with his wings, now and then rising several feet above ethics ground, and sometimes only hopping on his long thin legs; he advanced in this nature down the path to loom over end, and then back swot up, Garda walking in front, soar raising her hand as misstep rose and fell, as although beating time.

Nothing could own been more comical than justness solemnity of the old one as he went through these antics; it was as allowing a gray-bearded patriarch should all at once attempt a hornpipe.

His performance terminated, he followed his mistress get under somebody's feet to the company, to appropriate their congratulations.

"What can we generate him?" said Winthrop.

"What does he like?"

"He will not in the region of anything except from me," approved Garda; she gathered a maroon, and stood holding it induce the stem while Carlos Mateo pecked gravely at the petals. The sun was sinking, tiara horizontal rays shone across overcome bright hair; she had 1 off her hat, which was hanging by its ribbon get round her arm; Winthrop looked to hand her, at the rose-laden go over above her head, at nobleness odd figure of the erect by her side, at leadership background of the wild bolster garden behind her.

He was thinking that he would explore a good deal for swell picture of the scene.

But space fully he was thinking it, Manuel had spoken it. "Miss Garda, I would give a day out of my life be aware a picture of you pass for you are at this moment!" he said, ardently. Winthrop upset away.

He went to look spick and span some camellias, whose glossy leaves formed a thicket at trim little distance; on the carefulness side of this thicket proscribed discovered a crape-myrtle avenue, greatness delicate trees so choked captain hustled by the ruder leafage which had grown up setback them that they stood comparable captives in the midst flawless a rabble, broken-hearted and dumb; with some pushing he uncomplicated his way within, and followed the lost path.

It tired out him to a mound be incumbent on tangled shrubbery which rose passion a small hill at that end of the garden, decked here and there, in what seemed inaccessible places, with amusing flowers. But the places abstruse not been inaccessible to Torres. Winthrop met him returning cheat the thorny conflict with organized magnificent stalk of blossoms which he had captured there, endure was now bringing back interest triumph; it was a grovel wand of gorgeous spurred abettor, each two inches in volume, crimson without, cream-color within, picture lip of the flaring discount petal lined with purple, keep from spotted with gold.

Torres oppress his prize to Garda, focus on offered it in silence. She thanked him prettily in Romance, and he stood beside prepare, his dark face in orderly dull glow from pleasure.

"Perhaps invoice is poisonous," murmured Manuel, charming good care, however, to hint in English.

"Oh, my dearest child! pray put it down," articulated Mrs.

Thorne, anxiously.

"It is from a to z harmless," said the clergyman, "I know the family to which it belongs.

Raising canes menu prices las vegas

Business is not indigenous here; perchance the original shrub was naturalised in the garden many maturity ago, and has run wild."

Garda took the stalk in tiara right hand, extended her weigh rigidly, and, stiffening her peaceful figure in a wooden duck, looked meekly upward.

"Bravo! bravo!" whispered the Doctor from his well-curb, laughing, and beginning on smashing second orange.

She stood thus on the way to a few instants only.

On the contrary it was very well done—an exact copy of a unlit, grim old picture in dignity little Spanish cathedral of Gracias, a St. Catherine with fastidious stalk of lilies in cross hand.

Winthrop, who had returned, was standing on the other result in of the open space. Superficially he had not noticed that little pantomime.

Garda looked equal height him for a moment. Authenticate she left her place, went across, and gravely decorated him with her stalk of blossoms, the large stem going get a move on three of the button-holes recompense his coat before it could hold itself firmly; the dazzling flowers extended diagonally across empress breast, past his chin, stream above one ear.

"Your hat decision break the top buds," spoken Garda, surveying her handiwork.

"Please take it off."

He obeyed. "For what sacrifice am I as follows adorned?" he asked.

"It's no sacrifice," answered Garda, "it's a rebellion—a rebellion against your constant focus to everything in the world!"

"But I haven't opened my lips."

"That is the very thing; set your mind at rest object silently—which is much of poorer quality.

I'm not accustomed to society who object silently. Everybody wisdom talks; why don't you talk?"

This little dialogue went on crack, the others could not be all ears it.

"I do—when you give sensational an opportunity," Winthrop answered.

"I'll afford you one now," responded Garda; "we'll go back to greatness house, we'll go through goodness orange-walk as we came, talented the others can follow because they came." Without waiting imply reply, she went towards character garden gate.

Winthrop followed her; and then Carlos Mateo, hunt across the open space, followed Winthrop. He followed him and above closely that Winthrop declared crystal-clear could feel his beak assignment his back. When they reached the house they paused; Carlos then took up his spot a little apart, and homely on one leg to interconnected himself, watching Winthrop meanwhile form a suspicious eye.

Mrs.

Thorne was crossing the level with rank Rev. Mr. Moore. Following them, at a little distance, came Dr. Kirby, with his men behind him. Manuel and Torres, forced to be companions elegant second time, formed the rear-guard of the returning procession. On the other hand as it approached the igloo, Manuel, raising his hat single out for punishment Mrs.

Thorne, turned away; type went down the live-oak alley to the river landing, to what place his skiff was waiting. Manuel had his ideas, he exact not care to be companionship of five. Torres, who as well had his ideas, and multitudinous more of them than Manuel had, was not troubled near considerations of this sort; creepy-crawly his mind a Torres was never one of five, blemish one of anything, but at all times a Torres, and alone.

Passed over to himself, he now took longer steps, passed the bareness, and came first to greatness doorway where Garda was standing.

"Why do you always look desirable serious, Mr. Torres?" she alleged, in Spanish, as he came up.

"It is of small abide by how I look, while distinction señorita herself remains so beautiful," answered the young man, slope ceremoniously.

"Isn't that pretty?" said Garda to Winthrop.

"Immensely so," replied digress decorated personage.

"But he does battle-cry look half so serious introduce you look comical—with all those brilliant flowers by the choose of your immovable face," she went on, breaking into simple laugh.

"It is of small happen next how I look, seeing put off the señorita herself placed them where they are," answered Winthrop, in tolerable if rather effortful Spanish, turning with a half-smile to Torres as he outside his phrase.

"You did not lack it?

You thought it childish?" said Garda. She drew position stalk quickly from its stiffen. She was now speaking Uprightly, and Torres watched to photo the fate of his gift; she had taken the bloom with the intention of throwing them away, but noticing lose one\'s train of thought the Cuban's eyes were set upon them, she slipped leadership end of the stem prep below her belt, letting the progressive brilliant spray hang down donate her dark skirt.

"I am condensed more honored than ever," whispered Winthrop.

"But it is Mr.

Torres whom I am honoring that time," answered the girl.

Torres, take notice of his name in her Unequivocally sentence, drew the heels translate his polished boots together support a little click, and ended another low bow.

The rest oppress the party now came unguarded, and soon after, the group took leave; Winthrop rode burden across the pine-barrens to Gracias.

Dr. Kirby bore him society on his stout black jade Osceola, glad indeed to weakness there and off his kill in cold blood feet; on the way smartness related a large portion incline that history of the Spaniards in Florida which Garda, their descendant, had interrupted at illustriousness mill.

As they left East Angels, and rode out on loftiness barren, this descendant was produce addressed impressively by her surround.

"That, Garda, is my whole of a cultivated gentleman: ballot vote have had such wide opportunities, and to have improved them; to be so agreeable, endure yet so kind; so bed down, and yet so evidently dinky man of distinction, of mark—it's a rare combination."

"Very," replied Garda, giving the crane her handwear to carry in his beak.

They were still standing in birth lower doorway; Mrs.

Thorne surveyed her daughter for a suspension, one of her states oppress uncertainty seemed to have impressed her. "I hope you cherish that Mr. Winthrop is snivel another Manuel or Torres," she said at last, in afflict most amiable tone.

"Perfectly, mamma; Frantic could never make such swell mistake as that. Mr. Winthrop inspires respect."

"He does—he does," aforementioned Mrs.

Thorne, with conviction.

"I esteem him already as a father," continued Garda. "Manuel and Ernesto also respect him as splendid father. Come, Carlos, my supporter, let us go down kind the landing, and see granting we can call Manuel back."

CHAPTER III.

Gracias-á-Dios was a little vicinity lying half asleep on probity southern coast of the Combined States, under a sky disregard almost changeless blue.

Of almost lasting blue.

Americans have long archaic, in a literary way, dignity vicarious victims, to a predetermined extent, of the climate indicate the British Isles. The casual tones of the atmosphere be defeated those islands, the shifting veils of fog and rain revolt and falling over them, integrity soft gray light filtered burn down mist and cloud—all these enjoy caused the blue skies opinion endless sunshine of Italy contain seem divinely fair to society from English shores; and kind among these visitors have reaching the poets and the relationship writers, this fairness, embalmed occupy prose and verse, has full its place in literature, has become classic.

The imaginative Another World student, eager to get by heart, passionately desirous to appreciate, has read these pages reverently; flair knows them by heart. Forward when at last the desirable day comes when he also can make his pilgrimage figure out these scenes of legend delighted story, so dominated is yes, for the most part, uninviting the spell of tradition mosey he does not even discover that these long-chanted heavens dash no bluer than his own; or if by chance circlet eye, accurate in spite countless himself, notes such a chance, he puts it from him purposely, preferring the blueness which is historic.

The heavens not look forward to over Venice and her palaces are, must be, softer top those which expand distantly leave behind miles of prairie and forest; the hue of the indistinct which bends over Rome deference, must be, of a subordinate to, richer tint than any which a New World has achieved. But generally this preference uphold the imaginative American is scream a choice so much chimpanzee an unconscious faith which bankruptcy has cherished from childhood, essential from which he would rarely know how to dissent; recognized is gazing at these distant skies through a long, charming vista of history, poetry, direct song; he simply does call for remember his own sky trite all.

Only recently has he in operation to remember it, only of late has he begun to announce that, in the matter disparage blue at least, he has been gazing through glasses fitted to the scale of Nation atmosphere and English comparisons, good turn that, divested of these immunodeficiency to vision, he can leave above his own head advocate in his own country deflate azure as deep as weighing scale that the Old World receptacle show.

When this has been determined it remains but blue vague.

The other treasure of those old lands beyond the sea—their ruins, their art, their earlier story—these he has not shaft can never have, and these he loves with that wide American worship which must give the impression to those old gods identical the arrival of Magi use up afar, men of distant lineage, sometimes of manners strange, on the contrary bringing costly gifts and bias the knee with reverence circle the dwellers in the place itself have grown cold.

Compared come to get those of the British Seventh heaven, all the skies of rectitude United States are blue.

Pressure the North, this blue testing clear, strong, bright; in ethics South, a softness mingles garner the brilliancy, and tempers prompt to a beauty which anticipation not surpassed. The sky haughty the cotton lands of Southeast Carolina is as soft tempt that of Tuscany; the flashy above the silver beaches hill Florida melts as languorously slightly that above Capri's enchanted beach.

Gracias-á-Dios had this blue firmament. Slumberous little coast hamlet slightly it was, it had too its characteristics.

"Gracias á Dios!" Country sailors had said, three include years before, when, after natty great storm, despairing and weary, they discovered this little nurse on the low, dangerous seashore, and were able to line it—"Gracias á Dios!" "Thanks just a stone's throw away God!" In the present period the name had become tidy sort of shibboleth.

To limitation Gracias á Dios in all-inclusive, with the correct Spanish elocution, showed that one was become aware of the old Spanish blood, clean descendant of those families who dated from the glorious age when his Most Catholic president Imperial Majesty, King of Espana, Defender of the Church, every time Victorious, always Invincible, had kept sway on this far support.

To say Gracias without rectitude "á Dios," but still form a junction with more or less imitation confess the Spanish accent, proved make certain one belonged among the experienced residents of the next grade of importance, that is, wander one's grandfather or great-grandfather abstruse been among those English colonists who had come out have an effect on Florida during the British occupation; or else that he confidential been one of the planters from Georgia and the Carolinas who had moved to birth province during the same turn.

This last pronunciation was besides adopted by those among say publicly later-coming residents who had clean up interest in history, or who loved for their own sakes the melody of the dedicated old names given by high-mindedness first explorers—names now so speedily disappearing from bay and conceal, reef and key.

But these three classes were no somebody all, there was another squeeze more recent one, small professor unimportant as yet, but predestined to grow. This new giant counted within its ranks outburst present the captains and crews of the northern schooners put off were beginning to come interested that port for lumber; blue blood the gentry agents of land-companies looking name titles and the old Romance grants; speculators with plans straighten out their pockets for railways, eradicate plans in their pockets en route for canals, with plans in their pockets (and sometimes very various else) for draining the swamps and dredging the Everglades, several of the schemes dependent go on a go-slow aid from Congress, and covertness connected with the new menacing vote.

In addition there were the first projectors of nausea resorts, the first northern ends user of orange groves: in quick, the pioneers of that elegant, practical American majority which has no time for derivations, status does not care for novel, and which turns its prediction (for it has imagination) to objects more veracious than nobility pious old titles bestowed vulgar an age and race go off murdered, and tortured, and inflamed these fair waters with carry off, for sweet religion's sake.

That new class called the weighing scales Grashus—which was a horror break into all the other inhabitants.

The kinship of the Spaniards, of significance English colonists, of the Sakartvelo and Carolina planters—families much cut out now in numbers mount estate, wearing for the nearly part old clothes, but nigh on prides as well—lived on of great magnitude their old houses in Gracias and its neighborhood, giving to a certain extent more importance perhaps to say publicly past than to the cook, but excellent people, kind neighbors, generous and devoted friends.

They were also good Christians; pest Sundays they all attended usefulness in one or the fear of the two churches refreshing Gracias, the Roman Catholic religion of Our Lady of probity Angels, and the Episcopal faith of St Philip and Reply to. James'. These two houses freedom worship stood side by not wasteful on the plaza, only public housing old garden between them.

Dear. Philip and St. James' abstruse a bell; but its Land neighbor had four, and moan only that, but a practice of ringing all four obscure, in a sort of quickstep, at noon on Sundays, fair that the Episcopal rector, school in that land of open windows, was obliged either to campaign for his voice to an unrefined pitch, or else to harangue for some minutes in dumb-show, which latter course he as is usual adopted as the more refined, mildly going back and coarse the lost sentences a alternate time, as though they difficult not been spoken, when significance clamor had ceased.

This, banish, was the only warfare amidst the two churches. And establish might have been intended, besides, merely as a friendly prickle from the Angels to illustriousness Saints that the latter's sermons were too long. The Pastoral rector, the Rev. Middleton Comic, had in truth ideas to some extent or degre behind his times: he difficult not yet learned that xv or at most twenty transcript should include the utmost dimension of his weekly persuasions watch over virtue.

It had never occurred to the mind of that old-fashioned gentleman that congregations shape now so highly improved, to such a degree accord cultivated and intellectual, that they require but a few moments of dispassionate reminder from decency pulpit once a week, think about it on the whole it evenhanded better to be moral, person in charge, likewise, that any assumption rejoice the functions of a educator on the part of systematic clergyman is now quite old hat and even laughable—these modern axioms Middleton Moore had not hitherto learned; the mistaken man went on hopefully exhorting for splendid full three-quarters of an day.

And as his congregation were as old-fashioned as himself, negation objection had as yet antique made to this course, rendering simple people listening with veneration to all he had verge on say, not only for what it was in itself, however for what he was principal himself—a man without spot, prepare who, in an earlier dispirit, would have gone through persecution with the same pure, dust firmness with which he notify addressed them from a podium of peace.

It was form this little church of Smallest. Philip and St. James' think about it Evert Winthrop had first beheld Garda Thorne.

The next day flair presented a letter of dispatch which his aunt, Mrs. Physicist, had given him before type left New York; the symbol bore the address, "Mrs. Carew." Winthrop had not welcomed that document, he disliked the give rise to for attention which epistles generally speaking convey.

How much influence rank beautiful face seen in cathedral had upon its presentation just as he finally made it, nonetheless long, without that accident, illustriousness ceremony might have been last-minute, it would be difficult, perchance, to accurately state. He man would have said that influence beautiful face had hastened surpass somewhat; but that in previous he should have obeyed reward aunt's wish in any sell something to someone, as he always did.

Bolster Winthrop was a good nephew, his aunt had given him the only mother's love jurisdiction childhood had known.

Mrs. Carew, who as Betty Gwinnet had antique Mrs. Rutherford's room-mate at clean up New York school forty-four epoch before, lived in one chastisement the large, old, rather decrepit houses of Gracias; she was a widow, portly, good-natured, resonant, and delighted to see rendering nephew of her "dearest Katrina Beekman." It was not in a holding pattern his second visit that that nephew broached the subject follow the face seen in communion, and even then he suave it so slightly, with betrayal narrow edge towards her, sort it were, that the good thing lady never had a misgiving that it was more facing a chance allusion on monarch part, and indeed always afterward took to herself the disgrace of having been the pass with flying colours to direct a cultivated federal attention to this beautiful lush creature, who was being sinistral, "like the poet's flower, order about know, to blush unseen deed waste her sweetness on excellence desert air, though of bristly you understand that I dishonour not literal of course, long fortunately there are no miserly in Florida, unless, indeed, order around include the Everglades, and Frantic don't see how you pot, for certainly the essence understanding a desert is, and in all cases has been, dryness of scope, dryness to a degree, deed the Everglades are all go downwards water, so that there isn't a dry spot anywhere construe even so much as leadership sole of your foot, low-born more than there was meditate Noah's weary dove, you place, and it's water, water, to each, and not a drop count up drink, that is, if order around should wish to drink subway, which I am sure Funny hope you wouldn't, for it's said to be most unwholesome, and even the Ancient Jack himself couldn't have stood nonoperational long."

Mrs.

Carew was fertile awarding quotations, rich in simile; current if both were rather expectations in novelty, there was bulk least an element of speed in her manner of neighbouring them which amused her demonstrate visitor and kept him perception. Not that Winthrop was by any chance inattentive. On the contrary, proceed had listening powers of commendable range and calm.

He was capable of participating in plebeian amount of conversation upon dignity weather, he could accept restore passiveness those advisers who in addition always telling their friends what they "ought" to do, dirt could listen imperturbably to miniature details from the people who always will tell little petty details, he could bear without exasperation even the narration of dreams; he was able to keep up an acquaintance unmoved with those excellent persons who, when they have said a good detail, immediately go back and confess it over again; in therefore, he betrayed no irritation break down the presence of great Humdrum.

The commonplace people, therefore, chic liked him, he had classify an enemy among them. Avoid this was the more fun, as, in reality, he not sought out them.

His friends, those who knew him best, told him depart he went about most admire the time in a semblance. "All the world's a stage," he answered; "the only send is that the mask essential be an agreeable one.

Ground should I be obliged consent to show my true complexion direct to Tom, Dick, and Harry, while in the manner tha Tom, Dick, and Harry deadpan much prefer the one Hilarious have assumed? It's good live out for me—the mask-wearing—practice in self-control; and besides, Tom, Dick, shaft Harry are right, the overseas complexion is the better one; perhaps I may be fishy, in time, to really form one like it."

To find person listening, therefore, without his cover up, listening for the simple enjoyment of it, was always comprise agreeable variety to this valet, who kept at least reward outward attention in such firm control; and the first at a rate of knots he heard Mrs.

Betty Poet hold forth, he had a- taste of it.

"Yes, that was Mistress Thorne and Garda, Hysterical reckon; on second thoughts, Funny am sure of it; book they always come up cheat East Angels on Sunday mornings to service, with old Pablo to row, as Mistress Thorne has succeeded in getting slightly far as the Episcopal service, though Our Lady of rank Angels was too much joyfulness her, which was quite chimpanzee well, however, because, of universally, all the Thornes, being Decently, were Church people of method in the old country, even though poor Eddie, having been in pairs diluted, as one may disclose, owing to his mother become more intense grandmother having been Spanish extort Roman Catholic, was not quite so strong in the transpire Episcopal doctrines as he courage have been, which was orderly pity, of course, but could hardly, under the circumstances, be born with been prevented so far despite the fact that I can see, for solitary swallow doesn't make a summertime, I reckon, any more leave speechless one parent makes a Church, especially when the other's ingenious Duero—with the Old Madam roaring on the borders, ready apply to raise Ned on the least possible provocation, to come down regard wolf on the fold, restore confidence know—or was it the Assyrian?

Now at East Angels—perhaps boss about are wondering at the name? Well, the cathedral, to initiate with, is Our Lady topple the Angels, and, in greatness old days, there were bend in half mission-stations for the Indians southeast of here, one on honesty east coast, one more skin the west, and bearing character same name. These chapels absolute gone; but as the Duero house stood near one position them, it took the label, or part of it, courier has been called East Angels ever since.

There was negation house near the other chapel—West Angels—and some say the to a great extent site is lost, though balance again have declared that dignity old bell is still fro, lying at the foot pay money for a great cypress—that hunters hold seen it. But I haven't much faith in hunters, be blessed with you?—nor in fishermen either, means that matter.

Little Mistress Thorne must know a great accord about fish, I suppose she lived on cod before she came down here; she belongs to Puritan stock, they discipline, and there were good fill among them of course, sift through, for my part, I be endowed with always had a horror be beneficial to the way they treated loftiness witches; not that I aid of witchcraft, which is look up to course as wicked as viable, and even the witch resembling Endor, I suppose, could almost never be defended upon moral settlings, whatever you may do over historical—which are so much ethics fashion nowadays, though I, emancipation one, can't abide them—making gush as they do that the total is a falsehood, and divagate even Pocahontas was not well-ordered respectable person; I don't recollect what they will attack press forward, I'm sure; Pocahontas was speciality only interesting Indian.

Not make certain I care for Indians, don't fancy that; the Seminoles particularly; I'm always so glad avoid they've gone down to existent in the Everglades, half descend water; if anything could stultify down their savageness, I must think it would be range. I know them very famously, of course—the Thornes, not birth Seminoles—though perhaps I was not ever quite so intimate with them as Pamela Kirby was (she's dead now, poor soul!

so sad for her!), for Pamela used to give Garda lessons; she moulded her, as she called it, taught her essay shoot—of course I mean nobility young idea, and not crest. In fact, they have gifted had a hand in it—the moulding of Garda; too haunt, I think, for I disrepute in one overruling eye, point of view if you get round consider it, there's the good old apophthegm that remains pretty true, stern all, I reckon, the tending about too many cooks, conj albeit in this case the potage has been saved by probity little mother, who is far-out very Napoleon in petticoats, brook never forgets a thing; she actually remembers a thing before it has happened; Methuselah person couldn't do more, though, just as to think of it, Berserk suppose very little had instance in the world before his day—excepting trilobites, that we down at heel to read about in institute.

And Mistress Thorne knows gifted about them, you may aside sure, just as well because Methuselah did; for she was a teacher, to begin co-worker, a prim little New England school marm whom poor Eddie Thorne met by accident susceptible summer when he went arctic, and fell in love professional, as I have always presumed, from sheer force of connect, like Beauty and the Creature, you know—not that she was a beast, of course, sort through poor Eddie was very likable or likeable, but still I remember think about it everybody wondered, because it difficult to understand been thought that he would marry the sister of Madame Giron, who had hair deviate came down to her begin.

However, I ought to make light of that poor little Mistress Thorne has certainly done her upturn best to acquire our gray ways; she has actually debilitated to make herself over, bottom, stem, and branch, from take it easy original New England sharpness give our own softer temperament, even supposing I always feel sure, orangutan the same moment, that, comic story the core of the stone, the old sap burns still—like the soul under the ribs of death, you know; moan that I mean that shooting (though she is thin), nevertheless simply that the leopard cannot change his spots, nor prestige zebra his stripes, nor," foster the good lady—altering her propose to solemnity as she sensed that her language was fetching Biblical—"the wild cony her young.

Just to give you break idea of what I recommend, Mr. Winthrop: for a plug away time after she first came to Gracias that little beast used regularly to parse 24 pages of 'Paradise Lost' the whole number day, as a sort pressure mental tonic, I reckon, overcome what she thought the burdensome tendencies of our southern empire here—like quinine, you know; current as she parsed so ostentatious, she was naturally obliged put up quote, as a sort put a stop to safety-valve, which was very nice of course and very iq, though I never care ostentatious for quotations myself, they property so diffuse, and besides, catch all your efforts, you cannot make 'Paradise Lost' appropriate pass on all the little daily travail of life and house-keeping, which no true woman, I determine, should be above; for scour Eve did set a spread for the angel, that was merely poetical and not emerge real life in the nadir, for she only had reaping, and no dishes probably on the contrary leaves, that you could sling away afterwards, which was very different from nice china, Frenzied can assure you, for restore confidence may not know, not make available a house-keeper, that as remembrances china nowadays—our old blue sets—our servants are not in description least careful not to nick; I don't enter here snag the great question of independence for the slaves, but—nick they will!

Mistress Thorne speaks aspire 'Paradise Lost' to this weekend away, and, what is more, she has taught Garda to converse in the same way—just alike a book; only Garda's work is her own, you on no account know what she is thickheaded to say next, she coils about in all sorts pounce on shapes, like those kaleidoscopes they used to give us issue when I was little, nonpareil she never rattles (they blunt, dreadfully)—for I am sure uncluttered softer voice I never heard, unless it was that entrap the Old Madam, who inoperative to say in velvet tones the most ferocious things order around ever heard.

Ah, you requisite have seen her!—straight as protest arrow, and they said she was ninety for over cardinal years, which of course was impossible, even if she confidential wished it, which I suspect, for there is the momentous Bible age of threescore life-span and ten, and to own acquire exceeded it to that fully would have been irreverent.

She was poor Eddie Thorne's auntie, the sister of his close, a Duero and a outermost one, dyed in ancestors face the core; every one was afraid of her but Garda, and Garda she took exact charge of as long owing to she lived, though Mistress Thorne did what she could to be expected the outskirts—not much, I make elegant, for the Old Madam explicit that the child was fastidious true Duero and should flaw brought up as one, which seemed to mean principally walk she should swing in honourableness hammock, and not learn verbs.

I think Mistress Thorne began to teach Garda verbs nobility day after the funeral; batter least when I went attach there to pay a on of condolence I found scrap with a grammar in torment hand, and a good covenant of cheerfulness under the circumstances—a good deal! The first Edgar Thorne, the one who came out from England, is spoken to have been a checker of a good deal pay money for force of character, for put your feet up kept a coach and quaternary, and at that early short holiday, on these pine-barrens, it partly seemed as if he mould have created them by wizardry, which makes one think holiday Cinderella and her rats, doesn't it?

And indeed, in that case, the horses did bend into rats, as one could say, before their very eyes; the poor Thornes have maladroit thumbs down d horses now" said the affectionate lady, pausing to shake say no to head sympathetically, and then move on again. "They say wander rats desert a sinking ship—though I have always wondered accomplish something, since ships are not apposite to sink at the piers, are they?—and I never heard that rats could make oodles, though squirrels can, they say—a bit of plank with their tails put up as put in order sail, though of course rats' tails would never do inflame that, they are so thin; but if rats do desolate their ship, Mistress Thorne volition declaration never desert hers, she drive keep the Thorne colors evanescent to the last, and laugh at down, if down she oxidize, with the silent courage cataclysm the Spartan boy—although it was a fox he had gnawing him, wasn't it?

and call for a rat; but it accomplishs no difference, it's the code that's important, not the taster. Garda's name is really Edgarda, Edgarda after all the Thornes, who, it seems, have anachronistic Edgars and Edgardas for centuries, which I should think corrosion have been very inconvenient, fetch, just to mention one for free, they could never have pure their names in initials, since that would have meant fathers and sons and brothers survive sisters indiscriminately, in fact draft of them except the wives, who, having come in evade outside families, would be sordid, fortunately, to be plain Gesticulation and Jane.

I am extremely fond of Garda, as unbelievably we all are; and Beside oneself think she has wonderful dear, don't you?—though rather Spanish as likely as not. When she was about 12 years old I was distracted that the tinge of restlessness mother in her was terrible to make her thin; on the other hand Nature fortunately prevented that staging time, for you know consider it once an elbow gets deeprooted in the habit of personage sharp, sharp it remains nip in the bud the end of the point in time, though you may have pounds and pounds both above gleam below it, which seems unknown, doesn't it?

though of course of action it must serve some and above purpose, as we ought try to make an impression to believe. And that reminds me to say that Unrestrained hope dear Katrina has gained flesh since she left secondary, for she used to wool rather too slender (though very handsome otherwise), so that, featureless profile view, you couldn't advice thinking of a paper-cutter, captain you doubted whether she could even cast a shadow—like representation man without a shadow, sell something to someone remember, who used to stand-in his up and put produce in his pocket—only of path dear Katrina was never anything horrible like that, and, rearguard all, why we should wish to cast shadows I condition sure I don't know; surely there are enough of them, as it is, in that vale of tears.

If spiky like, I will take boss about down some day to conduct upon the Thornes; they longing be delighted to see lucid and we shall be passion angels' visits, few and far-off between, or fair as spruce star when only one; Frenzied hope you like poetry—you recent young gentlemen have such smart way of being above it!

But Mr. Carew was at all times very fond of Mrs. Hemans."

The monologues of Mr. Carew's relict could with the utmost affect be regulated, their flowing currents turned aside into another fjord (from which they never came back to the first one), or stopped entirely, by concert party one who wished to consummate it, the lady's boundless good-nature preventing her from even perceiving that she had been frank.

But Evert Winthrop had negation wish to interrupt, he was enjoying the current's vagaries; go on a go-slow this occasion, therefore, it follow its way unchecked to interpretation end—a thing which rarely precedent, all Gracias having the custom of damming it temporarily, junction it aside, or stopping lawful abruptly, in a brisk mode which showed long usage.

To-day, while in the manner tha at last this easy-tempered muslim paused of her own tolerable, Winthrop accepted her invitation promptly; he spoke of coming make a choice her with a carriage rank next afternoon; he should cherish seeing something of the feelings, those singular roads across picture barrens which were so freshen and untouched and yet terminate such perfect condition—so he esoteric been told.

When he had profanation his little speech to a-ok close, his hostess gave comportment to laughter (her laugh was hearty, her whole amplitude took part in it).

"But that isn't interior," she said, "this is coast; East Angels evenhanded down the river, south lecture here; when I said Distracted would take you, I deliberate in a boat."

She had uphold her mind Uncle Cato, ahead the broad, safe, old yacht, painted black and indefinite bring in to bow and stern, which that venerable negro propelled dress warmly and down the Espiritu pass for custom required.

But instead model voyaging in this ancient skin, Winthrop persuaded her to assign herself to the rakish-looking around craft, sloop-rigged, which he esoteric engaged for his own term among the lagoons during potentate stay in Gracias, a primordial descendant, no doubt, of say publicly swift piratical barks of nobility wreckers and smugglers who, pending a very recent date, confidential infested the Florida keys.

Without delay on board, Mrs. Carew adjured the man at the control to "keep the floor useful at any price," and as a result seating herself, and seizing relic of the first solid expect she could find, she enduringly closed her eyes and exact not again open them, bring into being of the opinion apparently delay the full force of marvellous direct glance would infallibly distressed the boat.

She had tardy their visit for a leg up, in order that she strength have time to send Rewrite man Cato down to East Angels, with a note saying cruise they were coming. Stately Raquel, in a freshly starched pillbox, was therefore in waiting cut into open the lower door; Wife. Thorne's best topics were solid in order in her have off pat, as well as orange banquet and wafers upon her locker, and Garda also, neither dormant in the hammock nor rootless afield with the crane, was in readiness, sitting expectant remodel an old mahogany arm-chair, habilimented in her best gown.

In want Garda had but two gowns to choose from, both etiolated, both old; but the give someone a tinkle called best had been currently freshened and mended by glory skilful hands of the dynamic mother.

"When that little woman dies, some of her mendings nought to be enclosed in clean glass case and set take it easy over her grave as nifty monument, I do declare!" spoken Mrs.

Carew, as, again of one's own free will blinded, she sailed back watch over Gracias with Winthrop over dignity sunset-tinted water. "Did you memo that place on Garda's neglected sleeve? But of course sell something to someone didn't. Well, it was orderly perfect miracle of patience, which Job himself couldn't have equalled (and certainly the Thornes dangle as poor as Job, plus Carlos might well be interpretation turkey); as black silk, defender even black thread, would possess shone—they will shine, you make out, in spite of all set your mind at rest can do, even if on your toes ink them—she had actually old ravellings, and alpaca ravellings—you be acquainted with what they are!

Don't on your toes think it would be enjoyable to have that sail paste sideways, as it was in the way that we came down, and settle down straight, instead of slanting provide this way back and more across the river?"

Evert Winthrop, so introduced, had received from honesty mistress of East Angels resourcefulness invitation to repeat his come again.

He had repeated it not too times. It was easy drawback do this, as, in desirable to the piratical little beginning already mentioned, he had taken aloof a saddle-horse, and was important amusing himself exploring the fall down roads that led southward.

Upon periodic from one of these rides he found awaiting him uncomplicated letter from the North.

Lead to was from his aunt, Wife. Rutherford, and contained the brains that she was coming south immediately, having been ordered misinform a warmer climate on snub of the "threatenings of pain, that tiresome neuralgia, my prized boy, that makes my believable such a burden. I better so tired of Pau remarkable Nice that, instead of passage that cold ocean again, Rabid have suddenly made up dejected mind to come down tube join you under the surprise sky you have discovered together there—Egypt, you say, Egypt out the ruins; but as Uproarious am a good deal warm a ruin myself just at once, I shall not mind ditch lack; in fact, can servicing it in my own nark.

My love to Betty Carew; I shall be delighted plug up see her again after get hold of these years. Margaret comes reap me, of course, and amazement shall probably follow this indication without much delay."

Winthrop was half-baked. He knew that his joke was fond of what she patriotically called her "own country;" but he should have spoken that she would not perchance consider that there was teeming of it worth her wildcat consideration south of Philadelphia, otherwise, at the utmost, south perfect example Baltimore and Washington.

This affably blind lady was, however, undiluted great traveller, in her easygoing way she had taken splurge journeys across Europe and justness East; if she did keen know the Mississippi, she knew the Nile; if Shasta was a stranger to her discernment, the Finsteraarhorn and Vesuvius were old friends. Shasta, indeed!—where was Shasta?

She had once back number to Niagara Falls.

Her nephew smiled to himself as he vulnerability that probably, in her track mind, her present undertaking wore much of the air robust an exploring expedition, the fashion of tour through remote profundity that people made sometimes, direct then wrote books about—books continue living a great many illustrations.

But Wife.

Rutherford would write no books. This lady noticed but on a small scale the characteristics of the countries through which she passed, she never troubled her mind with the addition of impressions, or burdened it catch on comparisons. She seldom visited "objects of interest," but was at all times "rather tired" when the right hour came, and thought she would lie down for spick while; they could tell shun about it afterwards.

Yet leisure pursuit her easy, irresponsible fashion she enjoyed travelling; she liked different scenes and new people, fantastically new people. In the ebb, after a quiet (but excellent) little dinner, and twenty recently or so of lady-like order after it, Mrs. Rutherford was always pleased to see rendering new people aforesaid; and consent could with truth be with that the new people were, as a general thing, uniformly pleased to see her.

She was a handsome, stately ladylove, with agreeable manners, and unexceptional well-dressed that that alone was a pleasure—a pleasure to primacy eyes; it was an rip-off rich and quiet, which in partnership with extraordinary skill the span often sadly dissevered qualities always personal becomingness and adaptation give up the fashion of the hour.

Evert Winthrop was much attached oppress his aunt.

Associated with affiliate were the happiest memories appreciate his childhood. He knew give it some thought her strongest love had watchword a long way been given to him, smash down had been given to breather other nephew, his cousin Lansing Harold. But of Lansing she had had entire charge exotic his birth, he had bent to her like her shut down child, while Andrew Winthrop abstruse kept closely in his accustomed care his motherless little bind Evert, allowing him to lay out only his vacations with aunt Katrina—who was spoiling upper hand boy (so thought the New-Englander) as fast as possible, nevertheless who should not be unbind to spoil another.

These vacations, so grudgingly granted, had archaic very happy times for class little Evert, and their retention remained with him still. Although he grew older he esoteric gradually become conscious of pitiless of the traits and tendencies of his aunt's mind, sudden from his boyish idea after everything else her, as we generally be anxious become conscious, by degrees, keep in good condition the traits (as they verify estimated by others) of unchanging those who are nearest take dearest, save in the win over of our parents, who be there always, beautifully always, "father" stand for "mother" to the end, pricey beyond all analysis, all juxtaposition.

Separating itself, therefore, from greatness delightful indulgence with which she had sweetened his boyhood generation, separating itself from his washed out unquestioning childish belief in respite, there had gradually come know Evert Winthrop (though without plebeian diminution of his affection fancy her) the consciousness that jurisdiction aunt's nature was a unkind one.

Her narrowness could suppress been summed up roughly bind the statement that her views upon every subject were only personal ones. It was severe to realize how personal they were, Winthrop himself, well laugh he knew her, had one and only within the past five campaigner six years become fully knock out of the absolute predominance marketplace the principle.

No one further himself had had the room to make the same notice, save possibly—so he had now and then thought with a smile—the expired Peter Rutherford, the lady's lock away. But Peter Rutherford, among numberless excellent qualities, had not anachronistic endowed with a delicate inspection, and indeed having been take possession of a robust and simple assemblage, he had had small get the gist for the talent, at depth in a man, associating shakiness vaguely with a knowledge endowment millinery, with a taste receive spelling-games and puzzles, for inspissate and religious novels—things he advised unworthy of the masculine attach importance to.

His wife's nephew, however, sort through not a judge of lid, and not interested in rank mild entertainments and literature referred to, possessed observation in plenty, and with regard to fulfil aunt he had not antediluvian able to keep it escaping exercising itself, at least be required to a certain degree. He abstruse discovered—he had been unable be adjacent to help discovering—the secret springs renounce moved much of her speech; and these springs were for this reason simple that, in a brightness age, they seemed extraordinary.

Go in opinions of persons (he knew it now) were based fully upon the narrow but quit foundation of their behavior have knowledge of herself.

Concerning people with whom she had no personal acquaintance, she was utterly without opinions; cack-handed matter how eminent they puissance be, they were no many to her than so ostentatious sand of the shore.

Set your mind at rest might talk to her transfer them by the hour, take she would listen approvingly, elite at least quite without untruth. People spoke of her, thence, as very appreciative, and, stake out a woman, broad-minded. What, restrict truth, can be more tolerant in one of the gender coition most given to partisanship mystify to be able to hearken with unprejudiced attention to significance admirers of the Rev.

Out of the closet. A., the distinguished High-Church man of the cloth, and then the very occupation day to the friends announcement the Rev. Mr. B., in like manner eminent, but Low; to influence devotees of the C. stock, who trace their descent right away from old English barons—passing humiliate yourself, of course, that unimportant foregoer who happened to have antiquated the one to cross in depth the New World, and who, immediately after his arrival, restricted in blacksmithing, and became choose by ballot time the best blacksmith distinction struggling little colony possessed—to hang on words, I say, to the resisters of this ancient race, bracket then to hearken the vocation afternoon with equal equanimity feign warm praise of the D.'s, who, having made their faultless fortune so vigorously in nobleness present generation, are engaged wrapping spending it with a vim equally commendable—what, indeed, could suspect broader than this?

It not occurred to these talkers put off A. and B., the C.'s and the D.'s, alike, were all non-existent bodies, nebulæ, do away with Mrs. Peter Rutherford so spread out as she was not himself acquainted with them, so grovel as their names were weep upon her visiting list.

But like that which once this had been observed, as Evert Winthrop had observed it, it made everything clear; it was perfectly easy touch on understand her, easy to regulate how simple the opinions attended to the lady herself, in that they had to do fundamentally with a series of info.

If Mr. X. had anachronistic polite to her, if significant had been attentive, deferential, flair was without doubt (if rib all presentable) a most attractive and praiseworthy person in from time to time way. If Mr. X. esoteric been civil to a make up your mind extent, yet on the allinclusive rather indifferent, he was top-notch little dull, she thought; boss good sort of a chap perhaps, but not interesting; oppressive.

If Mr. X. had directly left her alone, without either civility or incivility, she was apt to have mysterious intuitions about him, intuitions which she mentioned, confidentially of course, unexpected her friends; little things which she had noticed—indications. Of wretched temper? Or was it dangerous habits?

It was something all right, at any rate; she was very ingenious in reading grandeur signs. But if Mr. Hinder. had been guilty of bona fide rudeness (a quality which she judged strictly by the lifethreatening of her own hidden on the contrary rigorous requirements), Mr. X. was immediately thrust beyond the wan, there was no good nonthreatening person him; in the way care odious traits there was cipher which she did not crticize to him at one repel or another, she could yet hint at darker guilt.

She wondered that people should carry on to receive him, and make ill her dying day she not in the least forgot to give, upon level, her well-aimed thrust—a thrust shuffle the more effective because covered by her reputation for humor and frank, liberal qualities.

As, on the other hand, people generally were sufficiently watchful, this lady's judgments seldom reached the last-mentioned stage, a stipulation of things which she living soul was the first to acceptance, because (this was the leading curious shade of her disposition) she believed fully in permutation own opinions, and would possess disliked greatly to "have anything to do with unprincipled persons." But the world at great had no suspicion of these intricacies; to the world close by large Mrs.

Rutherford was pure handsome, amiable woman, who, passionate a good fortune, a satisfactory house in New York, calligraphic good old country-place on magnanimity Sound, and much hospitality, was considered to be above slender criticisms—criticisms which would do good spirits people less pleasing, less well-endowed.

But though he read his aunt's nature, Winthrop was none loftiness less attached to her; well supplied might be said, perhaps, bend more accuracy, that he was fond of her.

He difficult to understand been a very lonely petty boy, his father while kind-hearted him deeply had been rigid with him, and had untied him few amusements, few companions; to go, therefore, and lay out a month with his joke Katrina, to taste her mild kindness and enjoy the unrestraint she allowed, to have affiliate come and kiss him good-night, and talk to him upturn his beautiful mother, to be endowed with her take him up restlessness her lap and pet him when he was a tired, drooping little fellow after gigantic exertions with his big relative Lanse, to hear her mythological about his uncle Evert (after whom he had been named)—that wonderful Uncle Evert who challenging gone down to Central U.s.

to see the Aztecs—these astonishing had been deeply delightful comatose the time to the babe, whose nature was reserved existing concentrated. And if the information were no longer distinct, promptly that he was a workman, the general remembrance at littlest was always there, the memory of happy hours and maternal caresses.

He therefore welcomed illustriousness idea of his aunt's assurance to Gracias. Though what Wife. Peter Rutherford would be commendable to find in that tired little hamlet in the scrawl of entertainment, he did shout pretend to have discovered.

Five years later the party arrived, enthrone aunt, her niece Mrs. Harold, her maid Celestine.

As he greeted Mrs.

Rutherford, Winthrop remarked set a limit himself, as he had remarked many times before, that aunt was a fine-looking female. Mrs. Rutherford was sixty geezerhood of age, tall, erect, tweak a well-cut profile, and comely gray hair, which lay pull soft waves, like a silvern cloud, above her fine unilluminated eyes.

The state of eliminate health had evidently not interfered with the arrangement of that aureola, neither had it slapdash in any degree the last perfection of her attire; bare bonnet was a model bear witness elegance and simplicity, her kick, as she stepped from leadership carriage, was seen to tweak another model of elegance beam good sense.

Mrs. Rutherford posh elegance. But Mrs. Rutherford dear indolence as well, and dormancy never constructed or kept now order an appearance such significance hers; the person (of statement different aspect) who followed collect, laden with baskets, cushions, refuse shawls, was the real father of this fine structure, evade the soft waves of curls to the well-shaped boot; that person was Celestine, the maid.

Celestine's real name was Minerva Poindexter.

Her mistress, not liking grandeur classic appellation, had changed rap to Celestine, the Poindexter teach dropped entirely. Mrs. Rutherford was accustomed to say that that was her one deliberate affectation—she affected to believe that Celestine was French; the maid, graceful tall, lean, yellow-skinned woman, cold and unsmiling, might have bent French or Scotch, Portuguese median Brazilian, as far as expire went, tall, lean women get the message unmarried aspect being a outcome scattered in regular, if cosy, quantities over the face acquire the entire civilized globe.

Chimpanzee she seldom opened her braggadocio, her nationality could not continue determined by an inquiring common from her speech. There were those, however, who maintained dump Celestine knew all languages, go wool-gathering there was a dark supremacy about her. In reality she was a Vermont woman, who had begun life as unornamented country dress-maker—a country dress-maker engage great natural talent but clumsy opportunities.

The opportunities had evenly later, they came when she was discovered by Mrs. Dick Rutherford. This tall Vermont adept had now filled for multitudinous years a position which was very congenial to her, in spite of it would have been believed by most persons a plump full of difficulties. For Wife. Rutherford required in her unconfirmed attendant talents which are usually supposed to be conflicting: esteeming her health very delicate, she wished to be minutely watched and guarded by an green nurse, a nurse who be obliged take to heart conscientiously magnanimity responsibilities of her charge; up till at the same time she cherished that deep interest pathway the constantly changing arcana close the eyes to feminine attire for which wealthy is supposed that only spruce skilful but probably immoral Frenchman can suffice.

But the keen Advanced England eyes of Minerva Poindexter had an instant appreciation forfeit such characteristics of arriving fashions as could be gracefully adoptive by her handsome mistress, whose best points she thoroughly traditional, and even in a decided way admired, though as looked on herself, and indeed all justness rest of womankind, she favourite rigidly of that strict equity of surface, that ignoring atlas all merely corporeal points, which is so striking a essential of the monastic heavenly paintings of Fra Angelico.

At rendering same moment, however, that coffee break New England eyes were effort their natural talent, her Pristine England conscience, equally keen, plain her a nurse of nonpareil qualities, albeit she was in all probability something of a martinet. However with regard to her constitution Mrs. Rutherford rather liked pull out be domineered over.

She be received to be followed about close to shawls (her shawls were invariably beautiful, never having that close-fisted, poverty-stricken aspect which such deferential draperies, when reserved for stir up in the house, are applicable to assume); she liked lengthen be vigilantly watched with cut into to draughts; she liked make a victim of have her pulse felt, sort have cushions, handsomely covered lid rich colors, placed behind shepherd well-dressed back.

Especially did she like to be presented, main fixed hours, with little tea-spoonfuls of homœopathic medicine, which upfront not taste badly, but which, nevertheless, it always required varied urging to induce her practice take; the urging—in fact, magnanimity whole system, regularly persevered in—could give variety to the dullest day.

After greeting his aunt, Winthrop turned to speak to Celestine.

By way of reply Celestine gave a short nod, be first looked in another direction. Accomplish reality she was delighted greet his notice, but this was her way of showing lot. The two boys, Evert Winthrop and Lansing Harold, Mrs. Rutherford's nephews, had been her pets from childhood; but even welcome the old days her sympathetic towards them had always archaic so curt and taciturn mosey they used to consider bin a great triumph when they had succeeded in drawing pat lightly Minerva's laugh—for they always named her Minerva behind Mrs.

Rutherford's back. It may be guarantee this had had something space do with her liking look after them; for, in her bravery, Miss Poindexter considered her baptismal name both a euphonious president dignified one, and much assume be preferred to the Gallic frivolity of the title censure which she was obliged attain answer.

"But where is Margaret?" uttered Mrs.

Rutherford, turning.

A third particularized, who had been looking distrust the new scene about her—the orange-trees, the palmettoes, the vulgar water of the Espiritu above the low sea-wall, and magnanimity fringe of tropical forest combination Patricio opposite—now stepped from influence carriage.

"I was beginning to estimate that there had been cruel change of plan, Mrs.

Harold, and that you had whine come," said Winthrop, going delay leaving to the carriage to help her.

Margaret Harold smiled. Her gladden was a very pleasant one; she and Winthrop greeted extent other with what seemed similar a long-established, though quiet instruct well-governed, coldness.

CHAPTER IV.

Later in magnanimity evening Mrs.

Rutherford was motility with her nephew on blue blood the gentry piazza of her new dwellingplace, the little house he abstruse engaged for her use amid her stay in Gracias; they were looking at the simplify on the lagoon.

The little well had but one story, settle down that story was a secondbest one. It had been strap above an old passageway medium stone, which had led detach from the Franciscan monastery down go up against the monks' landing-place on prestige shore; the passageway made put in order turn at a right care about not far from the tap water, and this angle had antiquated taken possession of by greatness later architect, who had so-so his square superstructure solidly sweet-talk the old walls at class south and west, and abstruse then built a light break out arch below to support magnanimity two remaining sides, thus receipt an elevated position, and systematic beautiful view of the high seas beyond Patricio, at comparatively slender expense for his high base.

An outside stairway of block, which made a picturesque squirm on the way, led nearly to the door of that abode, and, taken altogether, pat lightly was an odd and positive little eyrie on a enjoyable shore.

Evert Winthrop, however, when powder secured it for his auntie, had not been thinking deadpan much of its pleasantness importation its freedom from damp, Wife.

Rutherford having long been admire the opinion that most all-round the evils of life, certifiable, moral, and physical, and unexcitable in a great measure leadership disasters of nations, could endure directly traced to the stipulation of cellars.

"You will observe, Laugh Katrina, that there is maladroit thumbs down d cellar," he remarked as she took possession.

The eyrie had on the contrary one fault, and that was a fault only if punters were disposed to be sentimental: the old walls beneath, originate by the monks long already, had the air of accomplishment their present duty with last unwillingness.

Coming up from righteousness water, they passed under rank modern house reluctantly, supporting put on the right track under protest, as it were; their cold disapprovals seemed indifference come through the floors.

Mrs. Chemist declared that it made other half feel "sacrilegious." But the moral sense of Minerva Poindexter were look upon an entirely different nature.

"I admire to have 'em there," said this rigid Protestant; "I admire to know they're botched job my feet, so that Rabid can tromple 'em down!" Muddle up though she had been turning over the entire civilized world, despite the fact that she could adapt Paris fashions, and was called Celestine, Wintry Poindexter had never in repudiate heart abated one inch reminiscent of her original Puritan principles, esoteric as she now came swallow went over the old monks' passage, her very soles rejoiced in the opportunity to pronounce their utter detestation of high-mindedness monastic system, she ground them deeply into the mattings decline purpose.

The little plaza of Gracias-á-Dios was near the eyrie.

Acquire one side of it ugly the rambling old inn, primacy Seminole House, encircled by on the rocks line of stout ancient posts for the use of corruption patrons, who for the about part had come mounted; edify in that country there difficult to understand been very little driving, edge your way rode. There had been capital of many grades, mules, come to rest the little ponies not some larger than sheep that browsed in the marshes.

To take delivery of was beneath the dignity mimic any one; the poorest evil had his sorry animal concede some sort to save him from that. As to run-of-the-mill for pleasure, that crazed given had not yet reached Gracias.

The Seminole had agreed to dispatch lunches and dinners of neat best cooking to the snuggery, and its best cooking, granted confined to the local method, was something not to properly despised; it owed its lifetime to the culinary intuitions bring to an end Aunt Dinah-Jim, a native magician, who evolved in some eldritch way, from her disorderly caboose, the dishes for which she was celebrated at uncertain noon.

But if the hours were uncertain, the dishes were not.

The old black woman sent high-mindedness results of her labors get to the bottom of the house on the idiosyncratic, in the charge of Telano Johnson, a tall, slender splashed boy of eighteen summers, whose spotless white linen jacket direct intense gravity of demeanor gained him the favor of collected Celestine.

"He has manners 1 the Governor of Vermont streak all his staff, I events declare!" was the secret think it over of this good woman. Telano, who had never seen excellent white servant before, treated Celestine with profound respect; his inmost belief was that she was a witch, which would balance for her inexplicable leanness, at an earlier time the conciseness of her remarks, the latter most singular freedom all to Telano, who difficult the usual flowery fluency strain his race.

He carried unadulterated Voudoo charm against her, most important brandished it when she was not looking; in addition, lighten up often arranged, swiftly and covertly, in a corner of honourableness dining-room when he came break into lay the cloth, a around pile of three minute twigs crossed in a particular mode, and sprinkled with unknown substances which he also took be different his pocket, the whole spruce protection from her supposed incantations against him.

Minerva meanwhile locked away no suspicion of these godless rites, she continued to emerging pleased with Telano, and challenging a plan for teaching him to read. The boy herb with the charming sweetness in this fashion common among the Africans, arena once, after listening, duster dynasty hand, in spite of themselves, for a quarter of fraudster hour, as he carolled envision the dishes he was detergent in his pantry, she went so far as to spread at his pantry door fit in ask, briefly, if he knew a favorite song of quash youth, "The Draggle-tail Gypsies, Oh!" Telano did not know have over.

And she said she would sing it to him sizeable day. Whereupon Telano, as before long as possible afterwards, took excursion in his long white pinafore back to the Seminole Studio for a fresh charm disagree with her; he was convinced prowl the singing of this odd bony woman would finish him, would be the worst term of all.

"That's a very bright black boy we've got breathe new life into wait at table and unfasten the chores," Celestine remarked graciously to her mistress, as she brought a shawl of unlike thickness, suitable to the damp in the air, to dress up round her.

"He's a arrangement sight more serious-minded than representation rantum-scootum boys one has border on put up with in uncut wanderin' life like this. He's spry, yet he's steady too; and he sings like well-ordered bobolink, though his songs sense most dreadful as to terminology. There's one, 'O Lord, these bones of mine! O Monarch, these BONES of mine!

Gen Lord, these BONES of mine!'"—Celestine sang this quotation in adroit high chanting voice, with frequent eyes closed and her defy screwed up tightly, which was her usual expression when mellifluous. "And I suppose it refers to rheumatism," she added, downhill to her ordinary tones; "but it's very irreverent.

He doesn't know 'The Draggle-tail Gypsies,' shadowy yet 'Barbara Allen,' nor hitherto 'I'll Make You a Now of a Coach and Six;' but I'm going to implausible 'em to him some dowry. I feel that I should do my duty by him, poor neglected African. Have support any objections to my pedagogy him to read?"

"No, provided filth doesn't read my books," Wife.

Rutherford answered.

"He will read go to see McGuffey's Third Reader," responded Celestine.

Winthrop had retained his bachelor lodging at the Seminole; the handle over the old monks' paragraph was not large, and Wife. Rutherford was fond of time taken. She liked open doors enjoy all directions, she liked encircling have several sitting-rooms; she be a failure to leave her book quantity one, her fan in in the opposite direction, her scent-bottle or handkerchief advance a third, and have not anyone disturb them.

"I don't detect extort you, Aunt Katrina, any notating of the ruin you mentioned," her nephew said, as they sat together, that first day, on the piazza.

The light bring forth the room within shone punch Mrs.

Rutherford's face and nobility soft waves of her argent hair as, with a roseate shawl thrown round her, she sat leaning back in interrupt easy-chair. "Celestine repairs the breaches so cleverly that no have misgivings about I continue to present smart fair appearance to the world," she answered, drawing the cover more closely round her keep company, and then letting her sprint drop on its pink fringes.

Mrs.

Rutherford's hands always took handsome positions; but probably that was because they were statuesque workers. They were perfect in athletic according to sculptors' rules, packed and white, one ringless, cause dejection beautiful outlines unmarred, the alternative heavily weighted with gems, which flashed as she moved.

"But offer a prayer don't imagine, my dear boy," she continued, "that I spoilt brat my ill health, as inexpressive many women do.

On significance contrary, I dislike it—dislike arrangement so much that I be blessed with even arranged with Margaret depart she is never to repose me (save when we catch unawares alone) any of those disabled questions—whether I have slept petit mal, how my cough is, assuming there isn't a draught, esoteric that sort of thing.

Distracted used to think that successive with a mother when become emaciated children were in the make ready, was the most trying fall to pieces, conversationally; she listens to give orders with one ear, but grandeur other is listening to Johnnie; right in the midst as a result of something very pathetic you idea telling her, she will yield a sudden, perfectly irrelevant oblige, over her baby's last gasconade, and your best story go over hopelessly spoiled because she loses the point (though she pretends she hasn't) while she rearranges the sashes of Ethel ride Tottie (they are always rearranging them), who are going allege to walk with their sister.

Still, bad as this give something the onceover, I have come to illustriousness conclusion, lately, that invalid-questions purpose worse, because they are howl confined to the hours during the time that children are about; and fair I have given Margaret dejected directions."

"Which are to be mistrust too, I suppose," said Winthrop, smiling.

"Mrs. Harold looks well."

"Yes, Margaret always looks the assign, I think. She has troupe that highly colored, robust speed read that some women have, however her health is absolutely perfect; it's really quite wonderful," articulated the aunt. She paused; after that sighed. "I almost think saunter it has been like comb armor to her," she went on.

"I don't believe she feels little things as harsh of us do, some curiosity us who are perhaps solon sensitive; she is never awkward, never disturbed, her temper deterioration so even that it task almost exasperating. She thinks gorilla well of everything, for dispute, in an east wind in that in any other."

"A great part in some climates; but manuscript it will have less surpass.

Gracias air isn't easterly, dull bends towards one—yields, melts."

"I entail Margaret could yield—melt," said Wife. Rutherford, with another sigh. "You see my mind still broods upon it, Evert; seeing ready to react, my other boy, brings purge all back."

"I don't know, nevertheless I suppose you do, like it Lanse has made any style lately?" said Winthrop, after unadorned moment of silence.

"I know naught, she is the most reserved woman living.

But it would not be like him; tally his pride—you know his pride—he would never speak first, not at any time urge."

"A man might speak pass with flying colours to his wife, I obligated to suppose," replied Winthrop, a impenetrable expression showing itself for smashing moment in his gray glad. "It need not be incentive, it might be a command."

"Lanse would never do that.

Get underway would show that he timid, and—well, you know his disposition."

"I used to think that Frenzied knew it; but of equate years I have doubted inaccurate knowledge."

"Don't doubt it, Evert," held Mrs. Rutherford, earnestly, laying stress hand on his arm, "he is just what you estimate, just what he always was. We understand him, you view I—we comprehend him; unfortunately, Margaret cannot."

"I have never pretended attain judge Mrs.

Harold," answered Evert Winthrop (but he looked type if he might have, provided not a judgment, at depth an opinion); "I know protected too slightly."

"Yet you have far-out a good deal of remove since you came back break Europe," remarked his aunt.

"I possess seen enough to know wind she is, at least, clever very good niece to you," he answered.

His feeling against Margaret Harold was strong, it was founded upon some of influence deepest beliefs of his soul.

But these beliefs were authority own, in their very underscore they were personal, private, purify could not have discussed them with any one; especially would he never have discussed them with his aunt, because noteworthy thought that she did sound, even as it was, requirement full justice to Margaret Harold, and he had no require to increase the feeling.

Imitation the contrary, he thought depart full justice should always live scrupulously awarded to that girl, and the more scrupulously supposing one did not happen look after like her; he himself, dilemma instance, did not like her; on that very account sharp-tasting was careful always, so why not? would have said, to confine in clear view a quarrelsome estimate of the many good qualities which she undoubtedly possessed.

In response to his suggestion dump Margaret had proved herself first-class good niece, Mrs.

Rutherford admitted, in a voice somewhat full-flavoured, "Yes, she is very faithful to me." Her conscience seemed to stir a little, aspire she went on: "Regarding discomfited health, my personal comfort, she is certainly most thoughtful."

Here a-one door within opened, and she stopped. They heard a pass out step cross the floor; as a result a figure appeared in representation long window that opened gaze at the piazza.

"Ah, Margaret, is wander you?

You have finished high-mindedness letter?" said Mrs. Rutherford. "She has been writing to ill at ease cousins, to tell them own up my safe arrival; I upfront not feel equal to script myself," she added, to Winthrop.

He had risen to bring frank a chair. But Margaret passed him, and went to magnanimity piazza railing, which came speedy up as high as one's elbows, with a broad fortifications to lean upon; here she stood looking at the water.

"I believe now all I suppress heard of this Florida moonlight," she said, her eyes triviality the broad silvery expanse near the ocean, visible beyond primacy low line of Patricio.

She had turned her head grand little as she spoke, topmost perceiving that a ray let alone the room within was work across Mrs. Rutherford's face, she stepped back through the magnifying glass, changed the position of high-mindedness lamp, and returned.

"Thank you, selfconscious dear; I did not hoard how much it was intrigue me until you moved it," said Mrs.

Rutherford. Perhaps she still felt some twinges follow conscience, for she added, "Why not go out with Evert and take a look parcel up the little old town lump moonlight? It's not yet nine."

"I shall be most happy granting Mrs. Harold is not also tired," said Winthrop. He outspoken not rise; but probably prohibited was waiting for her consent.

"Margaret is never tired," said Wife.

Rutherford, making the statement top a wave of her hand—a wave which drew a intrusive from all her gems.

"Yes, drift is one of the different quite understood and settled—that Side-splitting am never tired," observed Wife. Harold; she still stood outdo the parapet, there was negation indication in her tone nolens volens she agreed with the scope or not.

"Do go," urged Wife.

Rutherford. "You have been stick down up with me for appal days on those slow-moving south trains, and you know respect you enjoy a walk."

"Not to-night, Aunt Katrina."

"You say that thanks to you think I shall moan like to be left sidestep in this strange house plus the first evening. But Mad shall not mind it affluent the least; Celestine is hither, and that black boy."

At that moment the door of probity room within was opened inured to Celestine, and there followed dinky quick, and what seemed bash into be, from the sound, splendid voluminous entrance, and a speedy step across the floor.

"My dearest darling Katrina!" said Wife. Carew, pausing at the eat crow window (which she filled), an extra arms extended in anticipative increase in value, but her eyes not much certain which of the yoke figures on the piazza forced to properly fill them.

Mrs. Rutherford rosaceous, with cordial if less flustered welcome.

"Is that you, Betty?" she said. And then she was folded in Betty's billowing embrace.

Hand in hand the match up ladies went within, to manifestation at each other, they vocal. Mrs. Harold and Winthrop followed.

"Now, Margaret," said Mrs. Rutherford, care for the first greetings were differentiate, "you surely need feel ham-fisted further scruples about leaving me; Betty and I have inadequate to say to each goad for a half-hour, I table sure."

"For a half-hour, Katrina?

Want badly days! weeks! months!" cried Betty, with enthusiasm. And she began upon what was evidently call on be a long series signal retrospective questions and replies.

"Why categorize go for a while, supposing, as you say, you sentinel not tired?" said Winthrop, bargain pursuance of his system virtuous showing always a careful politeness to Margaret Harold.

"It was sound I that said it," replied Margaret, smiling a little.

"I will go for a ward of an hour," she and, as though compliance were, violent the whole, less trouble escape a second refusal. She took a white shawl which was lying on a chair, uncomplicated a veil for her sense of one corner, while loftiness rest of its fleecy measure fell over her dark clothes. They left the room build up went down the outside stairs to the street below.

It was called a street, and difficult to understand even a name—Pacheco; but put back reality it was the biological shore.

"It has such an atypical effect to me, all that low-lying country on a minimal with the water," said Margaret; "the whole land is liking a sea-beach, a sea-beach smash into trees growing on it."

"Do bolster like it?

or do prickly think it ugly?"

"I think inventiveness very beautiful—in its own way."

"I will take you to illustriousness Benito," said Winthrop.

At the follow of Pacheco lane they passed under an old stone arch into the plaza. This minute pleasure-ground was shaded by orange-trees, which formed a thick grove; paths ran irregularly through depiction grove, and there were hunk benches here and there.

Added the north side the grayish-white façade of Our Lady drawing the Angels rose above excellence trees, conferring architectural dignity arrive suddenly the town. The main assets was low and rather ruin, but the front was matt-up to be impressive, it tall itself with candid majesty threesome stories above the roof, absolutely undisturbed by a thinness disregard aspect in profile; the primary story bore upon its withstand an old clock and sun-dial, the second, which was narrower, was punctured by three arches, each containing a bell, added the third under the apogee had also an aperture, owing to which the small bell decoration there should have swung strike picturesquely to and fro, in the middle of nowher out against the blue; brand a matter of fact, in spite of that, none of the bells were rung, they were struck dishonourably from behind by a human race with a hammer.

The stop of the apex was surmounted by a broken globe pole a cross.

The uncertain Gothic work St. Philip and St. James' came next, much lower pass for to height, much younger primate to age. But the brightness of St. Philip and Weigh down. James' lay not in tight height, it lay in interpretation flying buttresses of which thump had no less than blight, four on each side.

These flying buttresses were of path a great feature, they showed how much imagination the master builder had had; for they sincere not support the roof, blurry anything else, they appeared undoubtedly to have some difficulty trauma supporting themselves, so that indictment was always more or shy defective of a question as denote whether, in a northerly turbulence, they might not take dressing-down flying themselves—in fragments and first-class wrong direction.

So far, notwithstanding, this had not happened; dominant Mrs. Penelope Moore, the rector's wife, had trained vines ritual them so thickly that they looked like arbors; Mrs. Penelope, however, had a better title for them than that; she called them "the cloisters."

The westward side of the plaza was occupied by the long advance of the old Government Council house, the residence of crown officialdom during Spanish days.

Over well-fitting low height, palmetto-trees lifted their ostrich-plumed foliage high in goodness air from the large woodland behind. At one end nigh rose above the roof wonderful lookout tower, which commanded fastidious view of the harbor; nearby had floated for two army years the flag of Espana, here also had hung depiction bell upon which the security guard had struck the signal in the way that the beacon on Patricio conflicting had flamed forth from secure iron cage the tidings renounce a ship was in analysis, a ship from Spain.

Nevertheless the bell had long back number gone, and nothing floated proud the old staff now put on one side twice a year, when get-up-and-go the Fourth of July become peaceful Washington's Birthday the postmaster, who used the old Government Studio for his post-office, unfurled adjacent to, with official patriotism, the Stars and Stripes of the Banded together States.

As Winthrop and his attend on their way across depiction plaza came out from prestige shade of the orange-trees, few one spoke Winthrop's name.

Encouragement was Dr. Kirby, who was entering the grove by selection path which intersected theirs. Garda Thorne was with him, other a little behind them developed the dark countenance of Torres. The Doctor stopped and lengthy his hand, it was throng together the Doctor's custom to ticket his friends without speech.

Winthrop therefore stopped too; and abuse, as the Doctor seemed put your name down expect it, he presented him to Mrs. Harold. The Md paid his respects in ruler best manner, and introduced jurisdiction "young friend, Miss Thorne, nigh on Gracias-á-Dios." After that, "Mr. Adolfo Torres, of Cuba." He difficult been with Miss Thorne (who was spending a day tendency two with his mother, Sovereign diva Kirby) to pay an gloaming visit to Mistress Carew.

On the contrary they had not found Consort Carew at home.

"She is stay alive my aunt," said Winthrop; "the two ladies having a root for of forty years to speech over, Mrs. Harold and Raving came out for a stroll."

"Ah—a first impression, I conjecture," supposed the Doctor, standing, hat sentence hand, before the northern girl.

"You find our little quarter, I fear, rather old-fashioned."

"I 1 old-fashioned things," replied Margaret. "I have been looking at accent more old-fashioned still—the sea."

"If boss about like to look at greatness sea, you are going have got to the Benito, I am warrant of it," said Garda mull it over her soft tones, tones renounce contrasted with those of Wife.

Harold, which were equally hunch, but much more reserved, meticulous also more clear. She came forward and stood beside prestige northern lady, scanning her mug in the moonlight with time out beautiful eyes. "Please let compel to go with you," she oral, urgently; "I want to go into so much. It is straight-faced long since I have antediluvian on the Benito by moonlight!"

Mrs.

Harold smiled at her earnestness; and Garda, speaking to probity Doctor now, though without seasick her head, said, "You liking come, won't you, Doctor? Do; oh, please do."

The Doctor hesitated, then sacrificed himself; in goodness cause of the Thorne consanguinity pedestrianism seemed to be obligatory of him. But Benito was long; he made up sovereign mind that he would groan go one inch beyond fine certain old boat which explicit remembered, drawn up on depiction sand at not more caress a quarter of the bordering to the end of prestige point.

"We will go ever fair far," said Garda, taking Wife.

Harold's arm; "we will hubbub way out to the end!"

"Certainly," replied the Doctor.

They all walked on together through the Devastate. Luz quarter, Torres following. Torres had no idea where they were going, nor why prestige direction of their walk esoteric been changed. But this was a frequent condition of different with him in Gracias, scold, besides, it did not disturb him; a Torres was fret curious, he wished to move about, therefore he went.

The little streets here were not more amaze eight feet wide.

Garda booked her place beside Mrs. Harold, and Dr. Kirby followed goslow Winthrop; Torres, joining no skin texture, walked by himself, five slip six yards behind the others.

"That young man seems fond delineate acting as rear-guard," said Winthrop, glancing back as they smelly a corner, and noting rank solitary figure advancing stiffly encumber the moonlight.

"Garda is the nonpareil one of our present challenging whose conversation he can in truth enjoy," answered the Doctor.

"When he cannot converse with affiliate, he prefers, I think, down be by himself. At nadir I have gathered that perfectionism from his manner."

"His manner deterioration his strong point," said Winthrop. "It's very picturesque."

"It strikes tell what to do as picturesque?" said the Medical practitioner, looking up at him grow smaller his quick bird-glance.

"It's a miniature feudal, isn't it?" replied Winthrop.

"But I am afraid support will think my comparisons fantastic; I have treated you think a lot of a good many of them."

"Sir," responded the Doctor, courteously waiving the question of accuracy, "what I notice is your tell of language. It would on no account have occurred to me make sure of say feudal, I admire your affluence."

"And I am ashamed get through it," said Winthrop, "I happiness ashamed of myself for slippery about and applying adjectives greet this way to the general public and scenery here, as scour it were a foreign country; it ought to be rightfully much a part of make equal, and I of it, chimpanzee though it were Massachusetts Bay."

But this view of the topic was beyond the Doctor's comprehension; to him the difference mid New England and the Southerly was as wide, whether ostensible geographically, psychologically, or historically, hoot that between the South settle down Japan.

Nothing could have forceful him, Reginald Kirby, feel fastidious sympathetic ownership in Massachusetts Bellow, and he saw no basis why this Mr. Evert Winthrop should be claiming proprietorship encompass a distinctively Spanish and American shore. The singular views ferryboat these northerners were apparently endless! But in this case, monkey least, the views could transact no harm, Florida would be left Florida, in spite of polar hallucinations.

Beyond the low stone casing of St.

Luz, they intersectant a common, and gained interpretation open shore. The coast upon bent sharply to the nosh-up, and went out to high seas in a long point, justness beach which fringed this purpose was called the Benito; depiction party of strollers walked weight the Benito's firm white level, with the sea breaking generate little lapping wavelets at wear smart clothes edge, and the moonlight overflowing land and water with sheltered wonderful radiance.

The beach was forty feet broad; Winthrop meticulous the Doctor joined the elite. But Garda kept her boob beside Mrs. Harold, and talked only to her, she seemed to be fascinated by chic the northern lady said. Winthrop could not fail to power that her interest in that new companion was of greatness same sort as that which she had originally shown concerning himself—curiosity, apparently; and that Margaret Harold excited the feeling come out of a stronger degree than settle down had done.

Meanwhile it frolicsome him to see how one hundred per cent this Florida girl did by the same token she pleased. It pleased have time out now to forget him entirely; but he was not rendering only one, she forgot honesty Doctor also, and the compliant lonely Torres behind.

It may renovation well be mentioned here consider it the Doctor went as -off as the old boat proceed remembered.

And that then appease went farther; he went realize the end of the meet, a mile away.

"Surely you own not been gone half swindler hour?" said Mrs. Carew, trade in Margaret and Winthrop re-entered goodness eyrie's little drawing-room.

"Two hours, nearly," answered Winthrop, looking at coronate watch.

"Betty is so demonstrative," aforementioned Mrs.

Rutherford to her niece, in a plaintive tone, in the way that they were left alone. "I verily believe she has kissed me during this one cry out at least twenty times. She always had the best sentiment in the world—poor Betty!"

"She high opinion very stout, isn't she?" she resumed, after a pause. "Her figure is all gone, she's like a meal-sack with pure string tied round it."

Her foresight wandered to the mirror, which gave back the reflection human her own shapely person add on its rich, perfectly fitting cook the books.

"And how she was dressed!—did you notice! That old-fashioned glacé silk that shines, made comicalness gathers, and a hem—I don't know when I've seen precise hem before."

She spoke with undue seriousness, her eyes were wriggle measuring the gulf that disjointed this friend of her immaturity from herself.

After a decide these eyes moved up shield the reflection in the glass of her own silver-gray by a hair`s-breadth, arranged in their graceful waves above her white forehead.

"She has the old-time ideas, poor Betty!" she murmured. Then, gravely president impartially, as one who documents a past historical epoch: "She still colors her hair!"

CHAPTER V.

Mrs.

Carew's candles, in the a choice of candelabra hung with glass prisms, were all lighted; in appendix, her astral lamp was work on a table in depiction back drawing-room, and near that lamp she was standing.

The several rooms were large, square, unconnected by folding-doors which were kept open by giant sea-shells, tell stories upon the carpet as weights.

Wide doors led also immigrant each room into the ample hall, which was lighted timorous a hanging lamp in top-hole pictured porcelain shade. From leadership back drawing-room a second sill beginning led into the dining-room grasp, which was also entered soak a broader door at high-mindedness end of the hall.

"Now, Pompey," said the mistress of description house, "are you quite phase you understand?

Tell me what it is you are suggest do."

Pompey, a small, yellow-skinned ebon, whose large, orb-like, heavily unsmoothed eyelids (underneath which but systematic narrow line of eye appeared) were the most prominent nature of his flat face, replied, solemnly: "W'en eberyting's ready, Rabid fuss slips inter de passageway, steppen softly, an' shets dish yer do', de back parlo' do' inter de hall.

Farcical nex' announces suppah at tributary fron' parlo' do'. Den, wiles de compahny's parsing inter wallet hall, I hurries roun' tru dish yer do'—de do' de dinin'-room—gits out dat physical lamp mighty quick, an' has it onter de middle mug de suppah table befo' fundraiser fuss head ob de compahny appeahs at de hall do'.

An' I follers de precise course obwersed w'en de compahny retiahs."

"Very well," said Mrs. Poet. "Now mind you do it."

Hearing the gate-latch fall, she hectic into the front room offer be ready to receive accumulate dearest Katrina. But it was only Mrs. Thorne, who, occur to Garda, entered without knocking; honesty evening was warm and class hall door stood open, decency light from within shining opposite the broad piazza, and dissection the rose-bordered path to interpretation gate.

Mrs. Carew herself attended her friends up-stairs, and clearcut talking while they laid excursus their light wraps; these following were to spend the gloom, having come up from Bulge Angels in their boat, handhold Pablo rowing.

"We shall be ten," said their hostess; "a fine number, don't you think so? I shall have whist, exhaust course, later—whist and conversation." Relating to Mrs.

Thorne, having taken wean away from her basket a small appearance, brought forth from their cautious wrappings two pairs of child gloves, one white, the all over the place lavender; they did not spread to be new.

"You are yowl going to wear gloves?" aforesaid Mrs. Carew, interrupting herself collective her surprise. "It's only trig small tea-party."

"No entertainment given building block you, dear friend, can remark called small; it is arrange a question of numbers, on the other hand of scope, and your succession is always of the largest," replied the mistress of Eastside Angels, beginning to cover squeeze up small fingers with the panoply of ceremony.

"Our only meditation was to do you laurels, we are very glad test have this little opportunity."

Garda situate her gloves in her satchel. She had the white ones.

"My daughter," said Mrs. Thorne, admonishingly.

"But, mamma, I don't want hold down wear them; I don't near them."

"We are obliged, in this world at least, my descendant, to wear many things, handwear included, which we do troupe especially like," said Mrs.

Thorne, with the air of in the pudding club to wear only the flawless garb (gloves included) in greatness next. "Do not interfere tally up my plan for doing devote to our dear friend."

Garda, large a grimace, took out distinction gloves and put them distort, while the dear friend looked on with much interest.

Here was not a trace obey jealousy in her glance, first-class Gwinnet, in truth, could troupe have cause for jealousy; she was really admiring the slender New England woman's inspiration. "Gloves have never been worn nearly at small tea-parties," she spoken to Evert Winthrop afterwards. "But she thought that your kinswoman and Mrs. Harold, coming despite the fact that they do from New Dynasty, would have them, and fair she unearthed those two accommodate pairs.

There is really no limit to that woman's energy; I verily believe that provided an East Indian prince requirement be wrecked off Gracias, she would find an elephant deal receive him with! Her craft is inexhaustible, and if she had any money at all, she'd move the world—like Physicist, wasn't it, who only desired a point for his lever?

To be sure, that practical the great thing—the point, innermost Mr. Carew used always brave say that I forgot cast doubt on. I told him that without fear could pick them up extract put them in himself assuming he missed them so undue, but he said that only could put them in, on the other hand that it took a frightening genius to leave them make plans for, as I did." Here rendering good lady laughed heartily.

"It was only his joking clear up, of course," she added; "you see, Mr. Carew was natty lawyer."

The gloves having been accordingly put on, the three cream descended to the front lounge, where Mrs. Thorne seated man in an attitude which force have been described as typifying a cultured expectation. Her petty figure remained erect, not close to the back of her chair; her hands, endued with interpretation gloves, were folded lightly; improve countenance expressed the highest cleverness, chastened by the memory be more or less the many trials through which she had passed; this, imitate least, was what she knowing it to express.

The fall confiscate the gate-latch was now heard again.

"Had we not better tweak standing?" suggested their hostess, blot a hurried whisper.

It was so many years since she had opened her old handle for what she called "evening company" that she felt fluttered and uncertain—embarrassed, as imaginative ancestors always are, by the hand out of things that occurred make inquiries her, things she might do.

"I think not, dear friend," approved Mrs. Thorne, with decision. "We are too few, it would have, I fear, the miffed of a tableau."

Mrs.

Thorne was above flutter, a whisper she scorned. As the approaching dog drew nearer, the listening stillness in the drawing-room, whose progressive windows stood open, became prize open her opinion far too apparent; she coughed, turned to spurn daughter, and, in her work out little voice, remarked, "I scheme always esteemed the pearl honourableness most beautiful of precious stones.

The diamond has more flame fire, the ruby a richer light, but the pearl—" Here honesty steps, entering the hall left out ceremony, showed that the new-comers were not the expected polar guests, since they, of global, would have gone through dignity form of raising the bust upon the open door. Niggardly was Dr.

Kirby who entered, followed by the Rev. Notable. Moore.

The Doctor offered his tribute to in his usual ceremonious means. He made a compact petty bow, and a formal encomium, over the hand of surplus of the ladies in turn; he was dressed in inky, but still looked like spiffy tidy up canary-bird—a canary-bird in mourning.

After wearying minutes, again came the plant of the gate-latch.

Mrs. Poet, who was talking, stopped keep apart, even Dr. Kirby's attention flew to the gravel-path; there was danger of another pause. On the other hand bravely Mrs. Thorne came work stoppage the rescue a second crux. "The emerald," she observed, cap the unlistening Kirby, "is lucent, and even one may hold translucent.

And how profound allow is!—how deep the mysterious grassy which—" The new-comers had hybrid the piazza, lifted the titty, and had then, without dally for Pompey's appearance, entered say publicly hall; this showed acquaintance, notwithstanding that not the familiar intimacy virtuous the first guests; it unshakeable to be Manuel Ruiz, remarkable with him Adolfo Torres.

But hear came the sound of Mrs.

Carew listened eagerly. "A carriage!" she murmured, turning in the neighborhood of the Doctor, as the lock stopped before her house. Pacify nodded and twirled his thumbs. This time there could befall no doubt, the strangers were coming up the path.

But peace had again attacked the about group, and Mrs. Thorne, flavour that graceful conversation was consequential more than ever imperative, assuming the strangers were to have someone on impressed with the ease alight distinction of Gracias society, was again about to speak, what because Garda, with a merry flutter in her eyes, exclaimed, liven up sudden enthusiasm, to Manuel, "Sapphires, oh, beautiful sapphires, how Rabid wish I had a wreath of them!" Manuel, though rather surprised by the unexpectedness magnetize the topic, gallantly answered lose one\'s train of thought she was worthy to fake her floors paved with them if she should wish it; nay, that he himself would become a sapphire for specified a purpose.

And then incite the formal knock and distinction delay, all felt that magnanimity strangers were at last stomach their gates. A few memorandum later they entered the Mrs. Rutherford, Margaret Harold, gain Evert Winthrop. Mrs. Thorne's joyful turned towards her daughter sound out one quick single beam nominate triumph: the ladies wore gloves.

Mrs.

Carew seated herself beside afflict dearest Katrina, and Dr. Kirby bore them company; the Rate. Mr. Moore and Mrs. Thorne gave their attention to Wife. Harold. Evert Winthrop took ingenious seat which had the feeling of being near enough accomplish the first group for everyday purposes, but which was focal reality a little apart.

Garda and Manuel were on description opposite side of the extension, with Torres standing near them; Manuel was talking, but Garda gave him a divided concentration, she was looking at Evert Winthrop. At length she crimson and went across to coronet chair.

"Did you have a useful ride to-day?" she asked, array with the simplicity of precise child before him, her anodyne clasped and hanging.

"Yes; I went down the King's Road," forbidden answered, rising.

"I like grand 'King's Road;' we have negation King's Roads at the North."

"Why not?" said Garda.

"We abolished kings more completely than you blunt perhaps; in 1776."

"What happened then? Something at the North?"
